Roob, Edward Mitchell
Edward Mitchell Roob, of Northbrook, IL aged 91 died peacefully at his home on March 21. Ed was born October 9, 1934, the son of Florence and Edward Roob. He grew up on the south side of Chicago and went to Chicago Christian High School. Ed graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana where he was in the Delta Chi fraternity, studied economics, and met the love of his life, Barbara Leske. Ed and Barb married in 1957 and went on to raise three children and three golden retrievers. Ed began a career in the banking industry at the First National Bank of Chicago. During that time, he earned an MBA at the University of Chicago. In 1973 Ed was named Special Assistant to the Secretary of Treasury in charge of debt management and moved the family to McLean, Virginia for two years. Upon returning to Chicago, Ed continued his work at First Chicago, his career spanning four decades at the bank. In 1982 he was proud to serve on the Grace Commission on government efficiency. Ed later managed the Chicago office for Daiwa Securities. Following retirement, he served as a board member for Brinson Partners and later UBS on several funds. A Northbrook resident since 1964, he was a long-time member of the Northbrook United Methodist Church. As members of Skokie Country Club for 50 years, Ed and Barb spent many hours golfing, curling and socializing with friends. Ed won the Men's Golf Championship in the D, C, B and Senior A Championships. Additionally, he made a hole in one at the club, not once, but twice. Ed also participated in many curling bonspiels throughout the Midwest. Cross country skiing was another favorite winter activity. He and Barb skied at the nearby Ryerson Conservation Area and took trips to Lone Mountain Ranch in Montana. Ed loved the Alleghany Mountains and spent a great deal of time at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia. He was also a generous donor to veteran's organizations. Ed was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, parents Edward and Florence Roob, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jack and Barbara Leske. Family left to cherish his memory are his brother Howard Roob (Diane Petrowski,) and children Edward Mitchell Roob, Jr. (Sandy,) Matthew Roob, and Katherine Fleschler (Rob) and grandchildren Edward Mitchell Roob III, Reagan Roob, Margaux Fleschler Brewer (Will), Joseph Fleschler, Benjamin Fleschler, and Great-grandchildren Alexandra and Clara Brewer. A special thank you to Ray Armites Reluya, who cared for Ed and Barb in their later years and became family. The family will have a private funeral service, but friends are invited to celebrate his life and share memories at Skokie Country Club on Saturday, March 28th, between 3 - 5 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to The Western Golf Association, Evans Scholars Foundation in his honor.
