Steve was a very, very special person to me and my family. I'll never forget how caring he was 38 years ago next month, when my Mother passed away and our Family had no idea what to do or how to handle our situation. Steve was there. Then again, 26 years ago next month, when my Father passed away, Steve was there for all of us taking care of every last detail so we would only have to take care of ourselves.
In March 2015, when my brother Jim was down on his luck and had no place to stay in between housing, Steve Lewis stepped in. On March 29, 2015, the day before my brother Jim Zito passed away, Steve put his own grief aside (he had lost his wife Linda just months before this) and he opened up his home for his good friend Jim. Jesus led him to stay with Steve on his final day. Jim and Steve talked and laughed on the morning that Jim passed away. After a restless morning, Steve told Jim to lay down in his bed and rest. Jim rested there then gently passed away in the care of his friend. Who, by the way, was the Funeral Director forever at Lewis Funeral Home in Elmwood Park where we all grew up.
Steve called me on the phone at work and stayed on the phone with me on my 40 minute drive to my home because I was so distraught. When my family arrived at his home, Steve gently spoke to us and told us everything. What he and Jim laughed about and spoke about. He then had us go to Jim where he had Jim looking peaceful so we could say our good byes. He then proceeded to contact the paramedics and the funeral home and made all of the arrangements for our Family.
I know that God wrote this script. It was no coincidence. Jim passed the day before my Mom's birthday, 2 days before my birthday, laid to rest on April 2, which is one day before my Dad's birthday. It was also Holy Week and he passed at his friend Steve Lewis, the funeral director's home, staying there only one night. Like everyone held hands to make this happen.
I will never forget what a truly good heart Steve Lewis had. He will always be considered a part of our Family and I pray that he has joined his Linda. And I know that Jesus took him in his arms to let him know, "You did good Steve!" Love from your friends Nick & Phyllis and the entire Zito/Psyhogios Family xoxo
