I thought of Stephen very recently and how we all carry the weight as one.
Sitting with my extended Golden family last weekend, we talked about losses and
explained to one nephew who was listening that as family, "we share the pain AND the joy."
He got it. There is no substitute for any one person, but at least we have each other.
RIP Stephen.

I went to Fenwick with Steve and got to know I got to know him during the year that we were leaders on the Snowball Retreat. I remember him as a really sweet guy, with a happy demeanor, who was kind to everyone, and he always had a smile on his face. Regrettably, I did not keep in touch with Steve over the years. I know a few Partners at his firm and they spoke of what a talented attorney he was and said that he was a rising star at the firm. From my memories of him in high school, I was not surprised by this. My sincerest condolences to his family, fiancée and friends over this terrible loss – you are all in my prayers.

Dear Chris and Buff: You are in my thoughts and prayers daily since I heard this, the saddest of all possible news. Stephen was a delight to all who knew him; your first work as a parent, what a success! In the days to come, we'll ponder his life and his sudden passing and pray for some understanding. For now may you, Matthew, Maureen and all his loving family be consoled with all the happy memories of that beautiful child. Stephen, pray for us, now and in the years to come. Love Cousin Sissy

To Steve's family:
Steve and I went to high school together. At Fenwick, I always knew him to be a friendly, fun loving, smart and hard-working guy - genuinely a pleasure to be around. Recently, a friend began working with Steve at Hinshaw. From his first days at Hinshaw last October, he spoke regularly of what talented, friendly, and well-respected attorney Steve was. That comes as no surprise to me. Steve will be missed dearly.
All my best during this difficult time,

There are truly no words to express this sadness. The past few days, in the midst of shock and extreme sorrow, we have found warmth in every memory of Steve. So rare is it that every experience had, and memory shared, involving one individual is of pure happiness and true joy...and Steve is that person. We already miss him more than words can express, and we hope that the comfort of his large number of friends may help Steve's family and friends through this impossible time.
With deepest condolences,

To the Vernon Family,
I am heartbroken over your loss. Steve and I were good friends at Fenwick High School, but had not seen each other in a few years until we recently met for lunch downtown. We had a great converstaion about our careers, old friends, marriage, family and of course Fenwick football games from 14 years ago. I left that lunch impressed with the successful man Steve had become, and equally inspired by the perspecitve he had on life.
Steve's was a true example of a life well lived, and I will miss him greatly.
God Bless,
Pat Gibbs

Christine, coming into the pool on Monday night, Barb Schafer asked if I know Christine. I said "Yes!" And I immediately thought of a special person, wonderful conversations with you in the pool over the years. Then Barb shared the news about your son. I didn't know your son, but one wants to take this horrible pain away from you as a parent. One can't! Oh life will go on, but...
For you and your family and many friends who had the privilege of knowing your son, my prayers--gratitude for being blessed with having Stephen for a son, a friend for 30 years. As the stories flow from many people, you will be struck by how much this young man made such a difference in the lives of people...

My heart and prayers are with the entire family at this time and for the future. I have many memories of Steve growing up with Brett and seeing life being enjoyed. The turn of events in our lives is the unexpected things that happen... we have the whys and the whys but we know the control is from above and is bigger for us to comprehend but the joy is the faith that we have to connect us to Steve in the future.
Prayers, grace and love to your whole Vernon family. We will all be missing a great man that was part of our lives. God's Peaceful Blessings to All. George Kubricht
