Stephen Bybee Obituary

Bybee, Stephen

Stephen Bybee, 79, lifelong Chicago resident, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2025. Beloved husband to Kathleen Bybee. Devoted father to William Bybee. Adoring son to the late Grace Bomberry. Cherished brother to James, William, Johanne, Hazel, John, Lois, Earl, Maxine, and Millie. He was also a caring uncle to many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Stephen loved his "Old-School" cars and going to car shows. He had a few he collected and even entered in the shows. He was a proud Chicago Firefighter for over 36 years; he really loved his job and helping people. Another one of his greatest joys and past times was spending time with his family and friends. Stephen will be deeply missed by all that knew him but never forgotten.

To The Bybee Family

Chief Bybee was an incredible human being who left his imprint on all who had the privilege of meeting him. He was a man of integrity and morals who was always willing to help others even if it meant inconveniencing himself. It was an honor to have met and worked with him. My condolences to all.

Dear Kathy and Billy! Steve was a good friend of mine going back to the days of driving the meat trucks and then being my boss on the Fire Department. He was truly loved by everyone and he always helped anyone that needed any help. Please accept our sincere condolences. As you know I am in rehab with a broken hip. Jimmy and Yvette Sutera

Steve was such a wonderful person. He was great friends with my grandfather Jerry Wesen. I would not be on CFD if it wasn´t for his encouragement and help. Any test I take or promotion I get I always think of Steve and thank him for the opportunity he gave me. He will forever be in my families heart. Prayers to his entire family.
