I am heartbroken to hear of Sophie's passing. I just had a dream about her last night -- during which she was helping me finish my dissertation. That dream caused me to look her up on-line today and I was saddened to discover that she is no longer with us. We used to have dinner together every week at the Student Union while we were working on our Ph.D.s at the U. of Wisconsin-Madison in 1989-1990. We met in a course on 18th-century literature. I went to visit her once in her Old Town condominium in Chicago, but I am sorry that we lost contact over the years. She was a warm, generous, interesting, and charming woman. I remember how much she loved her cat Pumpkin and her recordings of Tony Bennett. God bless such a lovely lady!
