Dear Marilyn and Family,

What can I say? Our hearts go out to you all at this most difficult of times. We just returned from vacation this evening and learned the shocking news via a message left on our home answering machine.

Sherwin was such a special person. Though my contact with him over the years was but a fraction of that which he had with Alan, he always left me smiling. I tend to think he had that effect on everyone.

Words are so inadequate when offered at such times, yet we send them nonetheless. May G-d give you the strength which, in time, eases your pain. Rejoice in the memories you have and know that Sherwin will always be with you. May his name be for a blessing.

Our heartfelt sympathy,

Lillian, Alan, Michael & Lisa Gerstner

Dear Everyone-

Words cannot express the sadness that we all feel about Sherwin. I have so many memories of Sherwin dating back to my childhood. Sherwin was an adorable and lovable guy. His tremendous warmth, huge heart, and fabulous sense of humor will be greatly missed by all. I can't make it to Chicago on Sunday, but my heart will be there with all of you.

With much love to the entire family,

May 25, 2003

Dear Marilyn, Frani, Brian, and Carolyn,

We have been grieving for Sherwin and for all of you since the moment that we heard about this tragedy. We really really wanted to be with you this weekend, but couldn't get there in time. Sherwin was like a teddy bear - I always looked forward to our trips to Chicago - or your trips out to LA to be with your warm, hysterical, loving family and to hear Sherwin's outrageously funny stories about teaching. His committment to family and his love to all of you was no secret.

May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem and may you find some comfort in the wonderful memories that you have of your beautiful father and husband.

Much love, Romi, Josh, Matan and Yehuda Sussman

To Frani, Carolyn and Marilyn,

I have had the pleasure of knowing Sherwin for many years. We talked several weeks ago regarding school attendance. We both have the same job at different schools. I could always count on Sherwin for the correct answer. We always laughed and joked about life and history whenever we talked. He was a great educator and a friend.

We made Sherwin and Marilyn's acquaintance through Elaine over 7 years ago and always looked forward to her Seder dinners where we spent enjoyable times with them. His warmth and charismatic personality left an indelible mark on our lives. Being not of the same faith, we were enlightened by his devotions and patience in his teachings. His humor and quality of life were admirable. We will truly miss him as well as the many others whose lives he touched. God always takes the best ones first. Peace to you, Uncle Sherwin.... With love and kindness, Judy and Stuart
