Dale Wormus Obituary

Longtime Alaskan Dale Wormus, husband to Darlene Scott Wormus and brother to Sam Wormus, died peacefully June 25, 2010, in Anchorage. He was 87.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. today at Until That Day Church in Eagle River.

He was born April 14, 1923, in Loveland, Colo., to Ernest Wormus and Olive "Blanche" Lawton Wormus.

Dale had a significant military career and was known as Maj. Dale L. Wormus. His last active duty was in Colorado. He went overseas to Korea for the U.S. Air Force. He brought back a great collection of personal photos, some kimchi and a great respect for the people and culture of Korea. As a pilot in World War II, he trained Chinese cadets to fly AT-6 American trainers.

He went to school at the Colorado Agriculture College (now CSU) for electrical engineer training.

Lured to Alaska by its job opportunities and great fishing, Dale moved with his family to the state in 1971. He had been hired by the Fairbanks Municipal Utilities Systems to be manager of the Fairbanks telephone system. Later, he moved to Anchorage. There he went to work for the Anchorage Telephone Utility as an engineer and/or salesman and remained until he retired.

During his retirement he enjoyed taking friends and family out fishing for halibut on his small, ocean-going fishing boat. Sometimes he might even take someone to the "secret fishing hole" up the highway toward Fairbanks.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Scott Wormus; brother, Sam; sons, Ron, Gary and Chuck; daughter, Suzanne; stepchildren, Steve, Lori and Rick; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dear Chuck:

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family. From the short amount of time I spent around your dad, I was always impressed with his depth of character and good nature. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Your old friend,

My condolences to Darlene, his children, and the Wormus family. Dale was a special person in the lives of many people. My family spent many wonderful times with his family in Colorado many years ago. Yet reading this notice is the first time I knew my last name, his mother's maiden name, was his middle name. It makes the bond seem even closer.

Chuck,
I just got back from Anc. and heard about your dad. My prayers are with you guys and call if there's anything you need. Its strange that we were around each other every day as kids and hardly see each any more. We should fix that. I'd call, but don't have your number anymore. I'll try to stop by this week.....Jeff Jackson
