Sam, my friend and birthday partner. Know that your witty personality and fun-loving ways will be missed. I thank God for your journey, and the realization of your destiny and purpose. May we all learn to appreciate this gift, called life. Thank you for restoring peace and joy into Bert's life, and for all the good times we shared. Rest in peace, my brother.

Sam I'm very blessed to have gotten a chance to get to know you. I will miss you very much. I know you loved Bert very much and if you had a choice you would have chose to stay here with her and the kids, but don't worry I'll look out for them. Just enjoy your new home.

Sam,
Now that you are with our Lord, we know you are in-charge of the angels that protect each and every one of us. Thanks for introducing me to your wonderful family. I have love for them all. Michelle is my heart, we've bonded like glue. Bert will always be my baby sister because I'm the oldest(smile). She's a jewel and I've learned a lot in regards to humility. Racheal will keep me young with her athletic abilities. She's a big protector, one of your qualities. I love her, she's a big girl now. Josh is the perfect son any parent would love to call Son. He's an intelligent young man you taught him well. You and Bert did an excellent job in raising your children. That makes me quite proud of you two. I love to listen to them speak and express guys. The three of them will go a long way in life they have a Gift and fear is not one of them. I love you all, JoAnn

Brother Sam, only the Lord could've brought you and I together, because the friendship you and I had was to deep for words to express. How blessed I am, to have crossed your path, and to have experienced what friendship is all about! I have heard it said, that if a person can pass through the earth and find ONE good friend, who is real, true, reliable, and shares the other persons experiences with him, then that man is blessed! You were that friend! Please believe me when I tell you, that you have changed my life! I will continue to tell the story about our friendship, it will not die. I love you Sam, and I will never, ever forget you...
P.S. Thank you for the journal, and sharing your thoughts with me. You never cease to amaze me, but the journal takes the cake!

Sam, in the mid 1960's we met for the first time in my second grade classroom in St. Anselm School on the southside of Chicago. Little did I know then that we would meet often during your journey on this earth and that I would be working at St. Elizabeth School in Chicago while your daughter, Rachel, was there in the mid 1990's. Thank you for wanting me to be a part of your journey home to God. Thank you to your dear mother and sisters, particularly your sister, Simone Mercer, who called to tell me that you were in Mercy Hospital and that you had come to see me at the convent in July, prior to going to Mercy Hospital. Simone drove me to Mercy Hospital to see you, and later on, she arranged for me to be at your home going services and repas with your family and friends. I felt so privileged. Your mother and sisters said that this is what Sam wanted them to do for me. You are at the head of the class now, Sam, and you are teaching us how to be and not to pretend. Say hello to your dear sister, Sharrell for me. Much love and graditude. Sister Roland Lagarde, S.B.S., your second grade teacher from St. Anselm School in Chicago, Illinois

Mr. Mercer
I will miss how you always made me feel when I call your home to talk with Michelle. You would always made fun of my name, asking me if I was from China. You would sometime answer the phone saying Harolds Chicken what do you want on your wings. If I was feeling down that day I know when I call your house you would always say something to make me laugh and lift my spirits. I am really gone to miss you but I know that I will see you again so keep some jokes for me.

Mr. Mercer,
I already miss waving to you from down the street and our short conversations in front of the house. Everytime I park in front of the house I still look down the street to see if I see you. Thanks for sharing the encouraging conversations from time to time that seemed to always make me smile. You are truly missed.

To the family and friends that spoke at Sam's homegoing. You all have truly touched my life with the words that was spoken about Sam. I knew him only in passing, but he was very pleasent and happy go lucky everytime I saw him. My life has changed just by being present at his homegoing. When it is my time to go home to be with our father, I will like for my family and friends to honor me the same as he was honored on that day. An Awesome experience, just awesome. It is evident he has left a legacy! I speak a peaceful blessing in your life Bert, Josh, Rachel, and Michelle. And will continue to pray for you all.

Sam, you are the best brother a sister could ever have. Always sharing, always caring, always loving. I know you are in a much better place and that you are now pain-free and dancing with the angels. I will always be thinking of you because you showed such great determination and courage. You made an impact not only on me as your sister, but an overwhelming number of people. I will be forever grateful to God for his having lent you to us. Please watch over me and our family and tell Sharrell I said hi.

My handsome Sam, my brother, my protector, and my friend. As of today these past several months seem to have been a dream. The physical pain you endured was so real that it is now time to accept the reality of our prayers. You have gone in peace and the blood of Christ has washed your pain away. You are in the company of our dearest sister Sharrell and your loving mother-in-law Doris. I know I'll be reunited with you all if I take advantage of your overwhelming examples of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and the acceptance of the destiny he has for me. You have taught me more than I have yet to realize. Thank you so much for inviting me into your life and sharing your faith with me. Thank you for your informal method of evangelizing. It was sooooo smooth. It was sooooo Sam. I could not believe we were having such conversations. Thank you for introducing me to the game of golf. I will continue to play under your leadership. I love you and thank God for you. Your sister Simone.

My Dearest Sam,
Thanks so much. I remember our last conversation. I can still hear the determination in your voice. I do know that your labor here is over. You have been called home to Glory. I still have the memories and you don't have the pain. I'll remember your soft spoken words of wisdom in everything I do. I'll try to make it a legacy to you.
Love,
Your Sister

Sammy,
Only I can call you that(smile)! I have so many different memories, from 49th street, 67th street to 95th street. Yesterday's homegoing truly painted the true picture of Sammy! I am thankful and grateful to have known someone who was so creative, determined, GRATEFUL, and most of all, loving to all people. I'll miss getting on your nerve and your sense of humor.
I know your biggest concern before going home was Bert. I need not to say more, you know I'll be there for her.
MUCH LOVE
