Aug. 25, 1915-Oct. 31, 2007
Samuel (Shikie) Levey, DDS, of Akron, Ohio and Boynton Beach, Florida.
Shikie is survived by his wife of 62 years, Maxine (Salpeter) Levey; son, Larry Levey and his wife Christine; son, David Levey and his wife Shirley, all of Akron; and his daughter, Hermine Levey Weston and her husband Brian of Hampden, Massachusetts. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Benjamin Levey, Zachary Levey, Kelsey Levey, Rachel Weston, Erica Weston and many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Levey was born in New York City. The family moved to Akron where Sam attended local schools. He returned to New York City where he received an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the City College of New York. He returned to Ohio and pursued a graduate degree in Dentistry and Oral Surgery from Ohio State University and Cincinnati Medical College.
Dr. Levey served his country as a Lt. Colonel in the United States Navy during World War II where he was stationed in the South Pacific.
Upon his return to Akron in July 1945, he met and married Maxine and began the practice of Oral Surgery with Dr. Edward Lash. Dr. Levey was on the staff of Akron General Hospital and practiced oral surgery in the Akron area for over 30 years.
Dr. Levey played in Jazz bands, working his way through college. He was a regular musician at the former Benito's club and he sat in with many Dixieland bands in Akron as well as in Florida. He was a member of Jack Scott's German band and The Boynton Beach orchestra where he played the French horn. Sam also proudly blew the Shofar during High Holiday services at Temple Israel in Akron for many years.
Sam was most proud of his children and grandchildren and was generous in sharing all that was his to give, including his passion for history and detailed stories of his family history. He will be very dearly missed by all his family and friends.
The Levey family wishes to express gratitude to the caring community at the Ridgewood VNS Hospice Facility and specifically to Sue Neptune and Carolyn Pastva, his personal care attendants.
The funeral will be held graveside on Friday, November 2 at 2 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Akron, Ohio. The Gordon Memorial Home (330-836-7989) is assisting the family. Calling hours will be held November 2 at the home of Maxine Levey from 5 to 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Visiting Nurse Service, 3358 Ridgewood Rd., Akron, Ohio 44333.
