I knew Ruth Moss very well in Medill's college classrooms. We were friends at Northwestern, but after graduation, I became very busy with opening my studio, "Betty Stuart Photography" Then she went with the Tribune, and I married Buck Rodgers, and changed the studio's name to Stuart-Rodgers.
Then I got busy working and raising 4 children. Ruth and I grew apart.
Although I kept up with her, and knew when she married, we were on separate courses. But I always remember a very loving girl, and in college, a very good friend.
Of course, I knew Joan Beck too, and was so proud of both of them for their commitment to the Chicago Tribune.
My heartfelt sympathy to Ruth's children and grandcildren

Ruth was a dear, lovely, brilliant woman who lived a rewarding life. No life is without pain, and Ruth bore hers stoicly. But she cherished her loved ones, and they returned her affection. She, along with Tom, will reside in my memory. I will miss their Christmas letter and the world will be diminished by their absence. My heart goes out to Mary, Tom and the grandchildren.

One day at the Tribune features meeting we were discussing a story on women wearing fur coats. In the 70's the anti-fur movement was in full swing.
"If I can convince you that the animals in my coat died of old age can I still wear it to work?" Ruth asked.
If Ruth ever had a bad day at work we never saw it. Like Tom she was always ready for the funny angle, the intrigue, the best way to
approach a story.
In recent years she's been a member of the Veteran Tribune Women's Book Club, adding her wise and lively observations to our discussions.
I will always miss her.

Before answering machines, voice mail, and text messages, there was Greenleaf five, six, eight, eight, fo-ah. I will always remember this and dear Ruth.

My mother, Joan Beck, used to tell of how thrilled she was when Ruth Moss, the most popular girl at Northwestern's high school summer program, asked to be her roommate when they returned to Northwestern for college. That was the start of a rip-roaring, lifelong friendship. I miss them both, but love to think of them together again, with Tom and Ernie too.

The news room never had a romance to match Tom and Ruth's. Many of us who were there will remember it always.
