Fried, Roberta (nee Katz), 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Northbrook on Feb 17. Bobby is survived by her children Elizabeth (Baruch), Susan (Jeff), Naomi (Dave) and Joel, and by her grandchildren Ione, Kate, Avraham Mordechai, Michael and Benjamin. Born January 17, 1932, Bobby grew up and was educated in Chicago where she earned several degrees from Roosevelt University, Rosary College and Northeastern Illinois University. A devoted children's librarian, Bobby inspired those around her to read, travel and participate in the cultural activities she so enjoyed. Intelligent, hard working and unpretentious in spite of her obvious personal gifts, Bobby worked for 30 years as a librarian in the Chicago Public Schools system and as a part-time employee of Lord & Taylor. Upon retirement, she continued as a library aid for Deerfield's Walden School and volunteered at the Maryville Academy. A memorial of remembrance in celebration of Bobby's life will be held at Weinstein's Funeral Home, 111 Skokie Blvd., Wilmette, IL on Friday February 19 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bobby's memory to the Chicago Botanic Gardens (Tribute Gift Program) or to the Highland Park Kellogg Cancer Center.

I guess I thought she'd just be one of those souls who would live almost forever. She was so special--just honest and unpretentious. I was the new kid on the block back then and she helped me grow up and understand so many things just by listening to what she had to say. I still have the magnet, and fanny pack she gave me. Can you believe it? I remember her visiting me at my house (when I was rehabbing) and Bobbi telling me I made a good choice when she looked at the linen on the bed. She was so proud of her family. I remember looking for her daughter's name at the end movies. Just looking at her picture and that great smile speaks to who she really was and is --one of the stars we'll look up at on a given night and marvel at the awesome wonders of GOD. I will truly miss her. I thought we'd get to have lunch and laugh again but in the timeless of souls I know we still will!

I was so sorry to hear about Bobbie's death. My mom and I always made a point to have dinner with her whenever we came to Chicago. I remember coming and staying with Bobbie and Eddie in Skokie on my first big trip at age 20. My mom passed away almost 5 years ago and I haven't been back to Chicago in a while, but I can still picture Bobbie and hear her laugh. She was very independent and very honest and she will be missed. She was a special lady and a cousin I will always remember.

So sorry to hear about the passing of "Ms. Fried" as we called her. I thought for sure with her fiery personality she would make it to at least 99! May God Bless Her! She was a great librarian and teacher.

Liz, Sue, Naomi and Joey: I was so sorry to read about your Mom's death. While we hadn'b been in touch in many years, I have so many fond memories of our wonderful trips together. She was a great source of knowledge for me and we had a passion for many of the same things. My thoughts are with all of you.

I worked with Bobby for a number of years at Frederick Douglass Middle School. We shared good and not so good times.

My deepest sympathy to you at the loss of your dear mother and grandmother. I only had the privilege of working with Bobby for a short time at Walden, but she made a deep impression on my heart. I am grateful for having known her. She truly was a remarkable person.

Please accept my deepest sympathy on the death of Bobby. I worked with Bobby at Lord and Taylor. She was an experienced and hard working sales associate. A donation to the Botanic Gardens will be made in her name.
