Murphy, Robert Michael

Robert Michael Murphy was born on May 1, 1944, and after 81 long rounds he finally set down his clubs on January 17, 2026. Bob was a friend to just about everyone, Bob had a talent for turning strangers into buddies and buddies into lifelong friends. He will be missed fore-ever. He is survived by his loving family, who happily shared him with so many others. Daughter Michelle Knezevich (nee Murphy), Son-in-law Ken, grandsons Owen, Kyle, Max and Justin, and former spouse Sonia, Siblings Sharon and brother Dennis. Preceded in death by his parents, Rosemary and Edwin, and sisters Rosie, Christine and Bonnie. Bob was a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the U.S. Army, 4th Infantry Division, 1st Battalion, 22nd Regiment from 1965-1967, a period that shaped his resilience, character and sense of duty. After returning, he worked as an Ironworker for Local 63 for more than 50 years, helping to build the skyline into what it is today. A devoted Chicago sports fan, he witnessed the Golden Era of Chicago. Rooted on the Monsters of the Midway and celebrated the Blackhawks dynasties. He was there for the magic of the Jordan years and loved every minute of it, but his true love was the Chicago Cubs. He had no patience for long lines or bad drivers, but he waited 108 years for the Cubs, and he'd say it was worth it. He was the man you called when you needed a laugh, a helping hand or someone to share a cold one with. He was happiest with family or friends at his favorite spot, the Lemont VFW. We are grateful that his life was full of good people and good times, and our wish is that the world sees more of both. Visitation 2 to 8pm Sunday, January 25th at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 301 75th St., Downers Grove. Family and friends are to meet back at the funeral home 10am Monday, January 26th for chapel prayers before processing to 11am Mass at Our Lady of Peace, Darien. Guests are then invited to meet the family for 1:30pm committal prayers and military honors at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Rd., Elwood, IL 60421.
