Robert Klaus Obituary

Klaus, Robert J. 71, passed away peacefully in Galena, Illinois, on Saturday, October 24, 2015 from complications of Parkinson's disease. He retired in Galena after serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of Oral Health America, a national organization that linked government, industry, health care professionals, and volunteer associations for public health and education programs to promote oral health. Klaus worked with Major League Baseball, and Hall of Fame broadcaster Joe Garagiola to launch the National Spit Tobacco Education Program; his work on this issue led him to participate in the White House talks relating to a settlement with tobacco manufacturers. Before joining Oral Health America, Klaus was Executive Director of the Illinois Humanities Council, a foundation that supports many of Illinois' most treasured cultural and educational institutions. He worked for the Iowa Humanities Board and also taught history at the University of Iowa and philanthropy at Northwestern University. Klaus received his PhD in history from the University of Iowa. In retirement Klaus settled in Galena, Illinois, where he worked with the conservation community by joining the Board of Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation. He forged a relationship between the Conservation Foundation and the Field Museum of Chicago to develop the Wapello Native American site in Hanover, Illinois. Klaus is survived by his wife, Joan and his three children, Christian (Christy), Liz Ategou (Masina), and Conor (Viola Lee). His grandchildren are Hannah, Amanda and Elena Klaus, William and Mateo Ategou, and Phillip and Willia Klaus. Robert is also survived by his siblings, Virginia (Don) Riordan, Jack (Diane) Klaus, Mary (the late Jim Sheridan), Charles (Pat) Klaus and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary (Rooney) Klaus. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Notre Dame de Chicago Church, 1336 Flournoy, Chicago, IL 60607. Donations can be made in his memory to the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation, www.jdcf.org or 126 N. Main St., P.O. Box 216, Elizabeth, Illinois 61028-0216 or to the Galena Center for the Arts, 219 Summit Street, Galena, Illinois, 61036. Information: Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Galena, IL 815/777-9000.

As the years have passed, I continue to think about Robert and what a exquisitely complex and compassionate person he was. He came into a field that was quite foreign to him, and applied his intellect and savvy about human nature in the context of history to shake up a stodgy old club. He challenged old ideas that had not worked and offered new perspectives. He transformed a quiet, dusty organization designed to defend the past into an ambitious provocateur that dared envision an invigorated and more socially relevant future. Thanks for the stimulating ride Robert. It has made a big difference in a lot of lives.

Dear Joan and Family,

My deepest sympaties in your loss. Robert was an amazing intellect, humanitarian, strategist and leader. He was also a great boss and I learned many things from him and grew in my own convictions and abilities. I,so,enjoyed working with him at Oral Health Ametica. It was a heady time for striving for good.
