I worked with her in Alsip, Illinois. We shared the exact same birth date. I called her my zodiac sister. I am both shocked and saddened. Belated condolence to Julie and all the family.

Rita was an incredibly courageous woman. I have known her for over 30 years. I met her at Sertoma Centre in Alsip, Illinois where she served people with disabilities for a great number of years. She was professional, hardworking and she made her Consumers adhere to the standards of excellence simply because she knew that they would get no "pass" out in the workforce. Rita could be tough! But she has touched so many lives. So many people with disabilities have achieved success solely because of her dedication and caring heart for that population. People who work in this field are not in it for the monetary benefits. You have to have a heart for people. I got to know Rita on a personal level. We could talk about personal things. We could uplift each other as women. As mothers! In the "old" days when Sertoma was more liken to one big dysfunctional family, we would get together for after work parties. Her laughter was infectious. Her sense of humor was always on point. After Rita left Sertoma I would go to Kohls in Crestwood, Illinois to get a hug and her friendly smile. I knew she was in the fight of her life. But she always smiled, kept her head held high and pushed through her pain. Now you are in eternal peace my friend. Rest on until we meet again.
