To the Verber Family:

My deepest condolences to you upon hearing about the death of Richard W. Verber. I met Richard for the first time at the U.S. Open Chess Championship in New York City. I had known before meeting him that he was one of the top promoters of chess in the Chicago area. I knew that he organized the record-breaking 1963 U.S. Open in Chicago and also organized other U.S. Opens, as well as U.S. Championships and international tournaments and simultaneous exhibitions by some of the world'd top grandmasters. There is no doubt in my mind that Richard will go down in chess history as one of the most outstanding promoters of the "royal game" ever. May he rest in peace.

With sincere sympathy,

George Mirijanian

Mr. Verber was a great chess teacher and the first one to really push me in my abilities. As a female many doubted my chess talents, Mr. Verber believed in me without regard to gender and did much to build my confidence. He will be missed.

My Uncle Richard gave me many things in life. I will never forget my first Bob Dillon album that was given to me for Christmas 28 years ago, and of course my first and only chess set from about 27 years ago. I still have these things, just like the fond memories of the great Uncle that he is. I will miss you Uncle Richard.

Richard Verber, my uncle, will be missed by many. His avid appreciation of art history, music, and especially chess affected almost everyone he knew. Richard was a gentle and sensitive man. His brilliant yet lighthearted intellectualism was truly a rare gift magnanimously offered to all.

Richard was a classical music lover unlike any other I have known, as well as being a chess God! He will be missed by his many friends and his relatives. How does one access the bio. and picture which appears in today's Trib.,Dec. 16?
