Dear Jane: I received the Spectrum Magazine today and was shocked to see that my friend Dick had passed away. He was one of my first friends at Lake Forest College and while we lost contact with each other for many years, I now feel fortunate to have reconnected with him just a year or two ago. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.

I only found out yesterday that our beloved friend Dick has taken place in Heaven. I must say, Amy and I remain overwhelmed with grief.

We never met Dick in person, but felt like we knew him personally through our communication via Facebook and by phone. When he learned of my current struggle with colon cancer, he made sure Amy and I knew he would be there for us in the event we needed encouragement. He made it a point to call me as often as his schedule allowed to make sure I was okay, to offer a prayer and to see if I needed anything. This meant more to me than I have the capacity to explain. Most always, there was a light-hearted email from him in my inbox in an effort to make sure I kept a smile at hand.

His work for The Church was seemingly unending as well. Not long ago, I was surprised when the UPS truck pulled up and delivered an unexpected gift from Dick. It was a copy of the book "Jesus Was An Episcopalian (and you can be one too)by Chris Yaw. I will forever treasure it and am reading it again. The Night Ministry was not just close to his heart, but in his heart as well. He encouraged us all to help help the ministry as though it were our own.

Until we're able to meet again, there will be a void in our hearts that nothing else can fill. Rest peacefully, Bud, in the in the arms of The One you love so passionately. You'll be forever missed.

Dear Jane and Tom,

I am so saddened over Dick's death. I thank Catherine Allen for contacting us.

Dick always made me feel very welcomed after I met and married Bart. He was always very warm and generous. He will always have a very special spot in my heart.

Bart and I will be unable to attend the services but you will be in our thoughts and prayers. We will be in touch.

I was just getting to know him again since we lost touch after college. He was a great supporter of my recovery. I will miss him and his positive support.
