When I think back of my memories of working at Marshall Field's State Street store, Dick Donat is front and center. He was my first store manager and, in my opinion, the best. He was always out on the floor, rarely behind his desk, a true example of an engaged, interested, concerned store manager. He was an example to follow.

My memories of Mr.Donat was the Christmas cards he sent out every year. Also during the Great Flood on State St. how he made sure things were going smoothly. He was Mr.Marshall Fields.

Richard and I worked together in the early 1960's selling cameras and leather goods at Fields Old Orchard Store. Though we only worked summer and Christmas vacations from school, he clearly loved retail and Fields. His cheerful personality was appreciated by everyone at the store. My condolences to the Donat Family.

My deepest sympathies to the Donat family. I worked with Dick for many years and have nothing but fond memories of him. He was a wonderful example to me as a manager. I am so glad that I was able to see Dick a couple years ago at one of the Marshall Field's reunions. I was able to tell him how much he meant to me. May he rest in peace!

He was the best I ever worked with. Not a week goes by as I walk the selling floor of the State Street store do I think of him. He loved this store and he was loved by the managers that worked with him. He walked the store, knew everone in this building, and knew every corner. He was the best.
