Richard Bridburg Obituary

Dr. Richard Bridburg, born on January 25th, 1939, died peacefully on January 10th of natural causes, a few weeks shy of his 87th birthday. In the final days of his life, he was surrounded by his wife of sixty-three years and his three children.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, to Harry and Dinah Bridburg, Richard was a star student and a talented athlete. Captain of his cricket team, he started medical school at Trinity University at age 16. While training at the Royal City of Dublin (Baggot Street) Hospital, he met Helen McCullough at a hospital dance. He asked her out almost every day for two years before she said yes, marking the beginning of a wildly happy lifelong love affair and partnership.
Richard and Helen emigrated to America in 1962, moving to Toledo, Ohio, where Richard did a residency at Mercy Hospital before training in psychiatry at the Institute of Living in Hartford, Connecticut. Richard went on to have an impactful and distinguished career, marked by his natural leadership abilities, his integrity, and his deep care for his patients and for all human beings. He was Clinical Director at the Institute of Living, President of the Connecticut Psychiatric Society, and Medical Director of Community Health Resources (CHR). A Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), he also served on the APA Board of Trustees and was Speaker of the Assembly from 1993 to 1994. He was also a member of Connecticut's Medical Examining Board. During the Vietnam War, Richard was a Lt. Commander, serving as a U.S. Navy psychiatrist from 1966 to 1968 in Philadelphia.
In his personal life, Richard prioritized family and friends. He believed in staying connected to loved ones and showing up for your friends. He made sure his three children got to know their cousins and grandparents with regular extended summer family trips to Dublin and by hosting Irish nieces, nephews, and grandparents frequently. He was a loving and proud grandfather to his four grandchildren, passing down his love of the football team Chelsea, games, music, and Dunkin' Donuts. He kept in close contact with his childhood friends and his first cousins who lived around the world. In America, Richard cultivated a close tribe of immigrant and non-immigrant friends, a chosen family.
Richard relished playing classical music on an upright Steinway piano, playing tennis, golfing, and reciting the Shakespeare plays he took part in during his college years. He had a quick wit and was always game for new adventures and friendships. Wherever he went, he built community. He created a men's lunch group in his retirement community in Farmington, CT, when he discovered the men weren't getting together the way the women were. In recent months, he had relocated to Arlington, MA, to be near his daughters.
He is survived by his wife Helen Bridburg; his children, David Bridburg, Sharon Bridburg, and Eve Bridburg; his sons-in-law, Bob Redwine and Evan Rosen; and his four grandchildren, Kyle Bridburg, Henry Brown, Milo Rosen, and Theodora Rosen. The family is planning a private memorial service in the spring. Contributions in Richard's memory can be made to Doctors Without Borders. Ellen and I were very saddened to learn of Dick's passing. I first met him when I was a resident at the Institute of Living, and he was one of my first supervisors. Ellen and I have many fond memories of times we shared with Dick and Helen. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Helen and her family.

I will always remember and appreciate Dr. Bridburg for his willingness to share his expertise and the passion for the work he did. He gave so much of himself to mentor, give feedback or occasionally ask a thoughtful question that would totally put you on the spot. He taught me much and was really a teacher to so many. He took the time to offer me support during my first difficult situation as a new professional. While that was 25 years ago, I have never forgotten that conversation or his helpful words. He was an amazing person and his memory will long live on. I am sorry for your loss and may your memories be a blessing.

It is with great sadness I express my condolences to the family. Dr B was a fascinating man, a wonderful human being, a well respected psychiatrist, and my mentor. It was an honor to work with Dr B. His teachings are at the core of the work I continue to provide, his kindness and compassion lives within each of us, students and clients, and his support got us through challenging days. He wore the love for his family on his sleeve as we heard all about you and how proud he was with all of you and your accomplishments. I appreciate his guidance during my early days as a supervisor and his support in building the ACT Team. It´s a rare blessing to be told your program is the medical directors retirement plan (1st retirement). I will always remember his humor and his stories. When he left ACT in his final retirement, it was the end of an era, but we kept in touch so it felt like he was still there. Now that he is gone, when we find ourselves challenged, we will ask ourselves WWDBD, What would Dr B do?
Thank You!

It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Dr. Richard Bridburg. He was not only a respected colleague and mentor at CHR, but also a genuinely kind and inspiring presence whose impact reached far beyond the workplace. His wisdom, generosity of spirit, and unwavering dedication to others shaped so many of us, and his legacy will continue through the lives he touched.
Dr. Bridburg's life story is as remarkable as the man himself from his early brilliance and athletic achievements in Dublin to a lifelong devotion to medicine.
May his family find comfort in knowing he passed peacefully, surrounded by love, and in the knowledge that his influence will endure in the countless colleagues, patients, and friends who were better for having known him. He will be deeply missed and always remembered with gratitude and respect.

I had the great pleasure of working with Dick when he was the Medical Director at CHR and then later when he worked on our ACT Team in Manchester. His dedication to the highest quality of care for those whom we serve was inspirational. He was a large part of our success as an organization as we grew and established ourselves as a provider of high quality care. He had a tremendous sense of humor. My deepest condolences to Helen, his children, and the extended family. He always talked so fondly of his children and grandchildren.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Dick's passing. I worked closely with Dick for years at CHR. He was a wonderful mentor and colleague who cared deeply about the people we served and about the organization. Many learned a great deal from him and the agency grew dramatically during his time there. He had high standards for care. And a wonderful, nutty sense of humor (he could deliver a punch line with the best of them). He loved his family and we talked often about his children and grandchildren. I missed seeing him in the last few years and will hold on to my memories of the times we spent together.

I shall miss him. May his memory be a blessing to Helen and the rest of your family.
