Reuben Nichols Obituary

Nichols, Dr. Reuben

October 26, 1946 - March 16, 2023

Palos Heights - Dr. Reuben Terrence Nichols, formerly of Chicago, passed away surrounded by his family, after a brief illness. The second of two sons, Dr. Nichols was born in McComb, Mississippi to the late Vivian (Bridges) and S.T. Nichols. He matriculated at the Illinois Institute of Technology and earned his medical degree from the UIC College of Medicine. He was known by his patients as a compassionate physician. His colleagues knew him to be a vital contributor to the wellness of many south side families.

Dr. Nichols delighted in hosting the Thanksgiving gatherings his large extended family enjoyed over the years. He was a true sports fan, an avid golfer, and he enjoyed travel. In September 2022, Dr. Nichols and Cathy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a lavish party followed by a week in Napa Valley.

With the passing of Dr. Nichols, the community has lost a kind and generous servant. He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine McEwen Nichols; children, Terrence Reuben and Benae Bridges; granddaughter Tiara Nichols; brother Brian (Mary); sister Sherry Robinson; niece Ashlee Nichols Greenfield (David); great-niece Kauai Greenfield; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, colleagues, and former patients.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 24, 2023 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 8301 S. Damen Ave, Chicago. Visitation will take place from 9:00am - 11:00am; the service will follow. In lieu of flowers, you are invited to donate to Emmanuel Baptist Church or to an HBCU of your choosing

My mom who is now 91 was under the care of Dr. Nichols colleague, Dr. Aubrey Mamby @ Medical Associates formerly located @ 3233 S. King Dr, Chicago. All the physicians there were absolutely wonderful and we are so honored to have met Dr. Nichols during that time. Our prayers go out to his family / friends and may he rest in power. Amen.

Dr. Nichols was the family doctor of the Howard´s of Chicago. He was my grandmother´s, my mother´s, my aunts´ , and at one time, my Primary Care Physician for many years. He possessed a quiet demeanor and a quixotic smile. His bedside manner was second to none. He will be truly missed.

Dr. Nichols was one of the finest attending physicians that I ever learned under and served under. It is for him that I am now serving as a physician in Ocean Springs Mississippi after completing a one-month preceptor ship in Tylertown Mississippi as a resident. He was clearly a great mentor and friend. May the blessings of Almighty God descend upon him forever, amen

March 23, 2023

"Well done thy good and faithful servant..."
On behalf of Janet,Willie and April Moore our hearts are both heavy and saddened upon hearing about your passing. What can you say about a man who wasn't just a doctor, husband, father, grandpa or sibling...but a true, genuine, compassionate soul. Dr. Nick was our family physician for too many years to count and the relationship he had with all of us transcended your typical doctor-patient relationship. If we had a BBQ or birthday party, he was there....everyone was important to him and his kindness extended to ALL who knew him. We know as believers his work on this side of the Jordan was complete, but there will always be a tremendous amount of sadness knowing he is no longer physically here with all of us. To his family, we LOVE you and you have our deepest condolences and sympathies.

Rest in Eternal Power...Ase'
