Ralph was a schoolmate at Ella Flagg Young School when we were boys, when he lived on Linder Ave. and I lived on Luna Ave. For severl years we also were in the same gym and swim group at the Austin YMCA. Among my memories are helping Ralph deliver store catalogs for his father's store on our bicycles and our pulling my red wagon over the Central Ave. bridge to a sand and gravel yard to get some sand for our teacher, Mrs. Violet Y. Pihera, to use in a schoolroom project. I also recall a couple afternoons in the Bergman kitchen where Ralph, Clifford May, and I passed time casting lead soldiers on winter days. In recent years I have been pleased to have a letter from Ralph once or twice a year and shall miss that correspondence.

Dear Sorel and family:
I am sorry to hear of Ralph's passing. Though we had not been close as family over the years, I can never forget the kindness of the family, particularly your father-in-law Dick, without whose help my parents and I would probably have perished in Europe.
Though I didn't realize it at the time, our coming to Chicago at a time when Ralph was in high school must have been difficult for him; the intrusion of a 7 year old (including the consideration he had to show that boy) could not have been the favorite passtime for a normal teenage high schooler.
I hope, that for you, your children and grandchildren, fond memories will hasten the healing of this sad time, and that Ralph's life will always serve as a blessing for all of you.

I will miss Ralph's warmth and easy going manner. In addition to the (in)famous Bergman chin he had a special spark that was evident in much of the Bergman family including my father William and his brother Edwin (of blessed memory).

With great sympathy to the Bergman family. Mr. Bergman was always very
kind to me and had an upbeat personality.
