So sorry to hear of Doc's passing. I didn't get a Christmas card this year - a tradition that goes back almost 30 years since I left Roosevelt University. Doc was always supportive, encouraging and realistic as a mentor. He was a good man who influenced my life. My condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Joanne,
We've spoken on the phone, but I did want to add my condolences to the guestbook as well. I'll never forget my introduction to Phil back in 1976, when he was the accompanist on our Northwestern University production of LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST. He invited the cast for a backyard picnic at his Lake Shore Drive, and soon we became friends. It's been such a treat to spend summer weekends with him at Lake Maxinkuckee. It is hard to believe we will never again hear his fabulous rendition of "Maxinkuckee Moon" on our out-of-tune piano--it's been a summer tradition for so long. Phil will be long remembered and missed.

We have been friends with Phil for over forty years, since our college days. Phil was a mentor to us, especially Barry. He took us to our first ballet and cooked dinner for us every Sunday night. He enjoyed hearing all of the details of the football games from the day before and Barry's role. He was responsible for Barry becoming a counselor at Deerhorn, and it was a fun two years with Phil and the Deerhorn staff. We got to spend a lovely day with him two years ago when we were in Chicago for a wedding. We had been hoping to see him this August when we will be in Chicago. We are so sorry for his untimely death and everyone's loss.

Many years ago at Howe High School, Phil and I, so close in age were friends. He was always even natured and kind. I remember him today as he was decades ago, quirky, interesting and fun. Condolences to the family.

I had the great pleasure of spending eighteen summer visits with Phil in Culver where a mutual friend would invite us to spend time at his family's house on the lake every year. Phil was a highly talented pianist, and our group always planned a sing-along evening with Phil at the keyboards, regaling our neighbors with Maxinkuckee Moon and Cole Porter, of course. Those were rare and special times that Phil made possible with his wit and joie de vivre. He was a marvelous conversationalist, and we all enjoyed his tales of accompanying many of the notable and sometimes eccentric musicians who concertized in Evanston. I'll never forget Phil's companionship and his generosity, and I shall miss him terribly.

Dr. Stevens offered me my first serious job right out of college as his Assistant for international Students at Roosevelt University. In the process, we also became close friends. He once told me, "stick with me and I'll make you a star." I did, and his guidance -- and patience -- were invaluable. I'll miss you, Phil.
