Philip Farley Obituary

Farley, Jr., Philip Joseph 70, passed away on February 1, 2007. Phil was born in Chicago on December 22, 1936, the son of Philip, Sr. and May, both of whom were Irish immigrants. As a first generation American, Phil went to work as a young man before he was able to finish high school. Nevertheless, he was able to live the American dream rising to be a highly successful real estate developer and businessman. He began his work life delivering newspapers and went on to earn his union plumber certification, shortly after which he began to develop his career in real estate. He would often say, "If a plumber like me can make it big, so can you." Phil was a true Chicago powerhouse. His real estate development helped improve some of Chicago's now most popular neighborhoods. The Gaslight and Barry Quadrangle rehab projects changed the face of the area surrounding Illinois Masonic Hospital., he redeveloped Piper's Alley in Old Town, and his home on Dearborn Parkway was the backdrop for many parties and celebrations for noted Chicagoans. In true Irish spirit, he opened P.J. Clarke's and was a founding investor in Gibsons Steakhouse. His legacy also includes Aztec America Bank and numerous other restaurants and pubs. He is survived by his four children Brian (Patricia), Philip III (Michele), Pam (Andreas Antoniou) and Shawn (Andrea), thirteen grandchildren Zoe, Nico, Sage, Kelly, Philip Joseph IV, Aidan, Maeve, Max, Kendall, Cavan, Mirren, Meghan and Dylan, one sister Joan Debock, many nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives, many good friends, caregivers, employees and acquaintances. Wake to be held Tuesday, February 6, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 11 East Huron Street, Chicago. Funeral Mass to held Wednesday, February 7 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael Church in Old Town, 1633 North Cleveland Avenue, Chicago. Entombment will be at All Saints Cemetery, 700 North River Road, Des Plaines, followed immediately by a private luncheon for family and friends at Gibsons Steakhouse, 5464 North River Road, Rosemont, IL. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Frances Xavier Warde School, 120 South Des Plaines, Chicago, IL 60661, Attn: John Pantle. February 3, 2008

The was a day when back in September of 2001 I Aurelijus "OREO" Baltusis met a man which changed my life significantly.
Big,tall, nicely combed hair, stylish trimed beard with grin on his face.Wearing short sleeve tucked in shirt in navi faded jeans and right pocket full of cash, lots of cash.Thats how and much more I remember about Phil.I loved his simple style, but only one thing I didn't like his shoes,he knew that and he respected that.Insted he liked my shoes :-)
Dear Phil,I always knew how lucky I was to know you,but I newer told you that and that brakes my heart. But I'm writing this message to tell you and to remind you that " You are the Best".
It's imposible to describe in words the feelings and thoughts I have, unless I'll say it in Lithuanian language, but I'm simply greatfull for things you have done. I'will always remember the day I met you and I always remember the day I lost you !!!
I'm also thank Farley family for a great support thru these years which helped me to become the person I'm right now.

Sincerely,

Aurelijus Baltusis

Pam, Brian, Shawn, Phil, Zoe, Nico, & Max,
It's hard to believe a year has passed. When you speak of your Dad, it's always in the present. I feel that your Dad is still here, guiding and protecting you. On this anniversary, may you, again, be wrapped in all the love and affection you always received in the past.

Phil - our paths crossed not that many years ago but since then we have shared many experiences and fun times together - some of which were breath holding. What I will miss most is our frequent get togethers at Gibson's with Bill and your family members and the time spent sharing and listening to the many fascinating stories you always had to tellus. Our times with Father Boyle and Bishop Listecki also bring back great memories. I'm sure you have found your place in heaven and someday I hope to again join with you and share your company once more.

Philip,
You will surely be missed by all those who knew you. No matter what others thought of you, you remained true to form. Your style, though unorthodox at times, was admirable. You didn't pull punches or throw rocks and hide your hand. You spoke your mind and you said exactly what you felt. Your honesty was often times misunderstood, however I respected and loved you for being a man that spoke his words without hesitation and meant them truthfully. Your policy, like mine, was honesty is the best way to deal with people whether they could deal with it or not. God rest your soul.
I will always remember the day you hired me. It was an experience like none other. Thank you for all you taught me during my tenure at your company.

Dear Brian, Butch, and Pam - I found out about Phil rather late, and I must send this message to you and your Dad.
Phil, firstly I regret not seeing you for quite a while. Time flies quickly, and you never want to think someone you knew and did love would not be around one day.

Phil, you gave me a start as an architect, you had faith in me, you gave me shelter in difficult times, you cracked me up with laughter about almost everything. You did your best to inspire me - I'm not yet there - but Thank you - my life would not be what it is without you.

I remember "Mr Farley" seeming like such a huge man to me as a kid coming to visit my friend Pam from my secluded home in Kenosha, WI. I would soon find out he had even a bigger heart. Always so generous and vivacious and he truly loved life. Even though I didn't see Mr Farley often, he was always the nicest man to me. Always made me feel welcome in his home. Brian, Butch, Pam & Shawn, rest assured, he is very proud of all of you, and so am I. My love to all of you.

to all the Farley Family
No need to tell you what a wonderful human being your dad was. He first did plumbing for my apt at 2055 west Montrose in 1969 and later I did work for him at Gaslight Village. His contribution of the wood flooring from Pipers Alley to the IAHC, thru my request, was so greatly appreciated. Sleep Peacefully My Friend.....Tom and Breege Looney XOXOX

To the family of Phil Farley,

May you find comfort in knowing that Phil touched the lives of many...

I can recall dad and mom talking about how the monthly bills would be paid after dad's accident. In his walking cast, dad resumed working for Phil and was able to walk me down the aisle on my wedding day.

May he rest in peace.

Many many years ago, I worked for Phil on Piper's Alley in Old Town. Quite a change for me, as a blue-collar southsider. I incurred an accident, and remember well that Phil had a job for me when I could return to work.

"Do for others what you want them to do for you." -- Matthew 7:12

Thank You, Phil.
God bless YOU AND YOURS...
