Paul Satter Obituary

Satter, Paul E. Of Miller Beach, IN, passed away on July 18, 2018, of cancer at the age of 69. He was the loving son of the late Mark J. Satter and Clarice Satter Stone; and devoted brother of David Satter, of Washington, D.C., Julietta Raby of Chesterton, Susan Satter of Chicago and Beryl Satter of New York, NY. Paul was an independent scholar who did research on the Holocaust and the world economy. He was born in Chicago on October 18, 1948 and graduated from Hyde Park High School and Southern Illinois University. In the 1970's, he owned a used book store in Chicago. After the store was sold he remained a devoted bibliophile, amassing a library of thousands of volumes, mostly works of history and philosophy. Paul loved the Indiana Dunes where he vacationed as a child and he remained devoted to the area throughout his adult life. An ardent photographer, he assembled an extensive collection of photographs of the Dunes. He also enjoyed singing in local choirs, both in Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 20, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at Temple Israel, 601 Montgomery St., Miller Beach with burial at Waldheim Cemetery, 1400 Des Plaines Ave., Forest Park, IL. Friends may pay their respects at the home of Susan Satter, 2615 W. Sunnyside, Chicago, IL at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2018, or at Shiva on Saturday and Sunday. An open house and service at Paul's home in Miller Beach will be scheduled for a later date. Burns Funeral Home, Hobart, IN entrusted with arrangements. www.burnsfuneral.com

I went to school with Paul at SIU. I´m so sorry he has moved on. We had a wonderful time together along with John Wortham, Joel Brown and myself Renee Fredrick (Bernal). We would all read the same books and then discuss them. Such incredible minds! John and I visited him at the family home in IN. The dunes were amazing. He loved water boarding. I visited him at his Chgo apt- filled with newspaper clippings and amazing articles. He was truly brilliant and had such a kind heart. I believe he was suppose to go to India with a famous economist on a Fulbright scholarship. I´m sorry I did not keep up with him these past 10 years. I met his sisters a while back in their Chgo home. I hope to meet them again. I feel very blessed to have known him. I will miss him. Renee Fredrick Bernal.

Satter Family,

I went to Hyde Park High School and Southern Illinois University with Paul. Though I haven't seen him in well over forty plus years, I've often thought about him. Paul was always fun to be with and conversations about the world were always interesting.

May he rest in peace.

My beloved cousin Paul, dear son of my father Joseph's brother Mark, will be missed always. My deepest condolences to my Satter family. Paul was so intelligent, knew everything about everything, sensitive, kind, gentle and possessed a great sense of humor. Paul was so necessary to be placed in this universe; everyone who had the good fortune to meet him was blessed. Growing up with my cousins was so wonderful. He will remain alive in my heart always. Truly sad to hear of Paul's passing. I remember Paul as part of the David, Ruby and Paul gang, wreaking havoc in our apartment, making forts under the dining room table and being 7 year-old boys! May his memory be a blessing. Linda Olar Zuk

To Paul's family, sorry for your loss. Jeremiah 29:11 assures us that God is thinking thoughts of peace towards us, to give us a future and a hope, may that bring you comfort at this difficult time.
