Haran, Patrick cherished father of thirteen, Master Carpenter, Poet, Philosopher. Patrick Haran passed away Saturday, June 17th at the age of 71 surrounded by his family. Patrick was born and raised in Tavneena, Charlestown, County Mayo, Ireland on October 8, 1934 to Michael and Margaret Haran. He was one of twelve children. He excelled in his studies developing a love for learning at an early age that never diminished. Living in England and New York, he married Margaret O'Donnell and settled in Chicago where he would make his home. They brought up thirteen children instilling in them the same thirst for knowledge and family values with which he was raised. Patrick worked as a proud Local 13 Carpenter in order to support his large family and became a craftsman of unbelievable skill and talent. He particularly enjoyed creating cradles, bookcases, and exquisite birdhouses; his finished masterpieces bringing him greatest joy when they became occupied by an adored baby, a cherished novel, or one of God's creatures of flight of which he was so fond. Patrick was an avid reader and lover of literature. He took great pride in his personal correspondence with noted dignitaries, and in his extensive music and photo collections. He was a self-educated historian in every topic imaginable, a great protector of nature in all its forms and always the dapper dresser. He was a solver of crosswords, a gardener extraordinaire, a true friend and a brilliant mind. Patrick found greatest happiness in giving to others whether it be a book, a plant or simply the joy of his company. He had recently become a bit of an adventure seeker dabbling in hot air ballooning and kayaking during his last days but home was where Patrick loved to be most of all. Patrick is survived by his beloved wife Margaret, and his thirteen devoted children: Margaret Ellen (Bill) O'Donoghue, Ann Marie (Kevin) Docherty, CPD, Patrick Christopher (Lorraine) Haran, Michael Angelo (Cindy) Haran OFD, John Paul (Colleen) Haran CFD, Thomas Ambrose (Debbie) Haran, CFD, James Gabriel (Denise) Haran, Rory O'Donnell (Char) Haran, Kathleen Elizabeth (Harry) Barrett, Finbarr O'Donnell Haran, Sheila Marie Haran CPD, Mary Brigitte Haran, Brian O'Donnell Haran. He is also remembered by eighteen adoring grandchildren who commonly referred to him as "Grandude". Patrick will be missed by all. Wake will be held on Wednesday, June 21, and Thursday, June 22nd, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at McGann Funeral Home in Chicago's Mount Greenwood neighborhood. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 23rd at St. Bede the Venerable Church. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

My prayers go out to your entire family. I recently lost a close family member (May 14, 2006) – I looked for comfort in the Bible. Recently I read a scripture that says that God is near to those that are broken at heart and those who are crushed in spirit he saves (Psalms 34:18). I was so encouraged by the scripture and I hope you are too. My prayer is that you can find comfort in this time of great grief.

Dear Haran Family,
I am sorry not to be able to attend the services for Mr. Haran. I heard about his passing from Mr. Guerin, when we were at a principal meeting together. I will pray for Mr. Haran and the whole family, especially Mrs. Haran and all the kids. I was impressed by all the kids names and job designations listed in the obituary. I'm glad you all have each other in this difficult time. If I could ever help any of you, please contact me. Sincerely wishing you my condolences. Mr. Al Theis (now at St. Mary of Czestochowa School in Cicero, IL)
