Norman Baker Obituary

Baker, Norman E.

Norman E. Baker passed away peacefully at Edward Hospital on December 14, surrounded by his four children. He was 93 years old. He was married for 63 years to his late wife Ann (Freyser.) "Stormin' Norman, as we called him always had an infectious smile. He worked many years for Jewel Food stores until he bought a Dog 'n Suds Drive-in in the late 60s. This was a challenging business decision as drive-ins were a dying breed. However, we all have great memories of working there. He finally sold it in 1982. After raising their family in Blue Island, they moved to Mayslake Retirement Village in Oak Brook. Norm loved to golf and bowl in retirement. He bowled a 257 at 89 years old! He also loved being president of the Mayslake Garden Club. His favorite activity was being in the Mayslake Marquee Shows where his common role was to perform on stage dressed as a woman. Norm's true passion, however, was dancing. His enthusiasm far out-shown his footwork and "every lady wants to dance with me!" Norm would exclaim….and they did! Norm is also survived by his children, Scott (Patricia Morin), Leslie Matz (Donald), Steve, and Kerry Sheehan (Edward), seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Born in Markham, Norm was one of 12 children. He is survived by his brothers Earl Baker, Jack Baker, Larry Baker and sister, Betty Watling. A memorial service will be held Jan. 27 at 11:30 am at the Chapel at Mayslake Retirement Village (1801 35th St., Oak Brook, 60523) In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mayslake Village at address above for a memorial bench in the garden in Norm's memory. Please write Norm Baker Bench in memo line on check. Questions? Contact: Kerry Sheehan, [email protected] for more info.

Norm was the friendliest, most vivacious resident of Mayslake, always smiling and looking for comedy.
A light went out when he left Mayslake!
