Hubert Glenn Tolson, Jr., 82, died on Friday, June 22, 2012. A native of New Bern, he was born to the late Hubert Glenn Tolson, Sr. and Florabele Day Tolson on January 14, 1930. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Genevieve Tolson Dunn.
Hubert graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1952, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he returned to New Bern and started his lifelong career as president of Turner Tolson Furniture, a business his grandfather started in 1887. Hubert was an avid tennis player and enjoyed many years of water skiing with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Guion Tolson; two daughters, Elizabeth Tolson of New Bern and Katherine Tolson Haydon and husband, Whit Haydon of Raleigh; son, Hubert Glenn Tolson, III and wife, Alice Cramer Tolson of New Bern; and two grandchildren, Scott Cramer Tolson and Caroline Baxter Tolson of New Bern.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Pollock-Best Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Colonial Capital Humane Society, P.O. Box 326, New Bern, NC 28563, to the Craven County Affiliate of the N.C. Community Foundation, P.O. Box 3411, New Bern, NC 28564 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. David B. Maybee, Dr. Roy Everett, Dr. Brian Kelley, Chris, Patty and all of the nurses in the intensive care unit at CarolinaEast Medical Center for their special care and concern during Mr. Tolson's illness.
