Niles Sherman Obituary

Sherman, Niles Former Alderman of 21st Ward, was born February 8, 1929, the eldest of ten siblings, to Robert and Amanda Sherman. Sherman departed this life on February 6, 2017. Sherman was a strong and devoted family man who leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Ann Sherman; sons, Duane (Carol), Niles Jr., Raoul and Sheldon (Kisha); daughters, Debra and Stephanie (Tim); stepdaughters, Deborah and Cynthia; thirteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Peggy) and Ronald; two sisters, Charmaine and Suzanne; a special godson, Marcus (Jasmine) and a host of other relatives and friends. Sherman was a man of integrity who will forever be remembered as a tireless advocate who fearlessly demanded on behalf of the people that you either, "cut us in or cut it out." This staunch dedication for the betterment of others was highlighted through his posts where he served as the Democratic State Central Committeeman of the 2nd Congressional District, Alderman and Committeeman of the 21st Ward. In 1993, Sherman retired from the Department of Water as an Assistant Commissioner; however, his service to others continued on. Prior to holding an elected office, Sherman was a personnel analyst for the State of Illinois, Director at the Marcy-Newberry Association, Director of the City of Chicago Youth and Correctional Services, liaison between the Chicago Police Department and his agency, a sales account executive, and a Chicago Police Officer, detective, and squad Leader, receiving numerous commendations for bravery and excellence. I met Niles when I returned to Chicago after living in the San Francisco East Bay Area for several years. As with Niles, I met numerous people who supported the advocate work I along a team of education activists had undertaken to push for improvements of neighborhood public schools. Niles was very encouraging about our work & he was quite insightful as to how to navigate the politics of the system. God bless his spirit as we continue to celebrate his ancestral community.

Niles was a good and decent man...and he was a friend of mine. Niles was always friendly, helpful and sincerely empathetic to the need of less fortunate people of all races, in our great City. I'll miss him, but I'm certainly a better person for having known him.

I met Niles Sherman during the 1980s after returning to Chicago to live; what a wonderful person to know, so extremely helpful with steering me towards people who could help me re-establish. It was indeed vintage Niles-- R.I.P. my brother.

Rest in Peace Alderman,

I knew you as a strong leader. I thank you for visting West Chesterfield Community Associations meetings of recent and when you were alderman.

We remember the bridge you built from the west side of the Dan Ryan to the East Side so children may safely get to Gillespie Elementary.

Further, you, my father and I shared a similar interest in Classic Cars. As a matter of fact you as president of the Multi-Classic Car Club helped me host some of the largest car shows in our community at Stony Island Plaza.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to for you and to your family.

As a young man needing a job and leadership after losing my father at 19. Mr. Sherman gave me a job attending to the 21st ward office . Where I would go on to learn about politics and assist the Chief as we called Mr. Sherman in developing a power house ward. He was a role model and a great leader to those around him. Always willing to share information and teach! Chicago has just lost a great solider!

I fondly remember Niles hard work in the 21 ward. My deceased aunt Laura and James Smith lived at 9212 s May. It was such a great neighborhood. I worked at Mahalia Jackson School under deceased principal,John M. Bean.It was one of the best schools in Chicago. At that time all worked together to make the community work.My prayers to the family.Know that God never fails. He will send you a Comforter.
