Nancy Apke Obituary
Apke, Nancy J. age 59, of Riverside, formerly of Chicago. Beloved daughter of the late John and Verne (nee Jablonski) Apke. Loving sister of Marie Apke (Greg Soldano), Michael (Judith) Apke and Louise Chileen, adored aunt of John, Nick and Luke Soldano, Amy, Colette, Vincent and Ted Apke and Barrie, Kaylyn and Cole Chileen. Fond great-aunt of Jessica. Nancy was a respected teacher for the Chicago Public SchooIs for over thirty-five years including tenures at Orr and Steinmetz High Schools. Nancy was the former Principal at John Hancock High School and was the Central Office Assistant Director of the high school "Read, Write, Well" program. Family and friends will be received at the Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home 10501 W. Cermak Road (2 blocks W. of Manheim Road) Westchester on Monday November 30, 2009 for a memorial visitation from 3pm until 9pm. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday December 1, 2009 at 12:00 Noon at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to Nancy's preferred charity is "The Quinto Scholarship Fund", a fund started after a young student of Hancock H.S. was killed in a traffic accident. It was a pleasure to work as a teacher at Hancock College Prep School under the leadership of your loved one. She loved teaching and the young people who lives she touched.
We have talked of many things; I respected her opinions and views. She allowed us the opportunity to grow as teachers.

Dear Marie, Judith and all members of Nancy's family,
We have watched daily as you have taken extraordinary care of your dear sister Nancy. Such love can only be said to be the deepest kind we have ever seen, and we know you showed Nancy every moment, every day, how much she meant to all of you.
We will miss a bright, kind and wonderful neighbor, who loved making a beautiful garden in her life and nurturing those in her family and at her school. We are very sorry that she has passed away, and our prayers are with you all.

I have only just recieved the information about Nancy's passing. I am so sorry for your loss. Nancy was a phenomenal friend and I know how much she loved her family. I can't even find words to express my condolences and my sorrow. The professional has lost a wonderful person, her friends have lost a faithful friends, and your family has lost an angel.

I'm so sorry to hear about Ms. Apke. I was just talking about her the other day with a former classmate of mine. She was my english teacher at Orr High School. She left an impression on a lot of us. My condolences to her family.

Of the few High School teachers I truly respected, it is with great sadness to find out that such a jewel has now left the earth. My fondest memory of her would have to be my senior year when all was chaotic in my world, Ms Apke took the time to listen and allow me to be my true self in her presence. I also still have my Writer's Inc book, in which she stated "I would always need throughout my studies". I still reference it until this day. My condolences go out to her family. She will be missed. I am shocked to hear of the passing of Ms. Apke. I had the pleasure of having her as my homeroom and english teacher at Orr High School. She exposed me to some many things as a young, ecletic teen. I first met Nancy over 10 years ago at a Chicago Area Writing Project Program she led at Morton High School where I taught. One day we talked about a book review we had both heard on NPR. The next week when our class met, she gave me a copy of the book. I still have it today. It's called "The World's Shortest Stories." I am so saddened to hear that hers has become one of them. My condolences to all of you who knew and loved her.

To the Apke family,
Nancy touched so many students in the Chicago public schools, but she touched even more through the many teachers for whom she provided professional development workshops and classes. We, in the Chicago Area Writing Project, were so sorry to hear of her passing and will always remember Nancy's humor and warmth.
