Myles Borshell Obituary

Borshell, Myles CHC20010 a man dearly loved by so many people, whose lives he touched while living in Chicago, IL; Carson City, Nevada; and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, passed away in the company of his wife and two sons, on December 8, 2002. Myles was a person of many interests and talents, particularly as an artist. He developed a technique of painting in monochromatic hues derived from a mixture of charcoal and oil on all types of materials using mostly his fingers. A major influence in Myles' works was Vincent Van Gogh, whose work taught Myles that capturing the expressiveness of the human face was a truly worthwhile pursuit for an artist. Myles always considered art to be a way of reaching others and focused his goal so viewers could sense the emotions and thoughts of his subjects. Myles' Wildlife and Native American portraits have been collected throughout the USA and other countries, including a permanent display of Dat- So-La-Lee, a Washoe Native American basket weaver, in the Washoe Museum of Native American Art. Myles was an accomplished martial artist, a member of the American Shorin-Ryu Karate Association and a student of the Wyoming Karate Club. The ASKA bestowed Myles with an Honorary Black Belt on December 15, 2000, an honor given only to a select few in the history of the Association. Born in Chicago on October 25, 1940, Myles grew up in the city, graduating from Roosevelt University on June 10, 1962. Myles went on to attend the Art Institute of Chicago and the pursue dual careers as a tax and financial planner and as an artist. In 1994, Myles retired from business and moved to Jackson Hole, WY with his wife, Karen to enjoy the beauty of the nearby National Parks and to be closer to his sons, Ari and Bret. Myles enjoyed spending time with Karen, playing golf with his sons and friends and always enjoyed planning for the next delectable meal at a favorite restaurant or at his beautiful home. Myles considered Jackson to truly be paradise. Myles is the beloved husband of Karen Borshell for over 40 years. Their love affair began in the 1950's when Myles was 17 years old. It was common for those who were fortunate enough to spend time with both Myles and Karen together to be deeply touched by their love and affection. Myles is the loving son of Irene Borshell, brother of Kennard and brother-in-law of Steven Schultz. Myles had a loving friendship with his sons, Ari and Bret. The strength of the relationship between these three men is difficult to put into words. "We are so very proud to be his sons. We have never known a man more honest, sincere and loving. We aspire to be half the man, friend, husband and father that our dad was. If we can accomplish this we will be lucky men" agree both Ari and Bret. So well liked was Myles by his son's friends that many of them are self- proclaimed, "adopted sons of Myles". Myles' kindness and love for animals was strongest with the dogs. He loved and developed deep relationships with Yuri, Duma, Riley, Tahoe, Luke, Scotch, Max, Chris and many others. Myles enjoyed helping dogs in need both from the dog pound and by saving former racing grey hounds. A striking and charismatic person; the sound of Myles' voice will be missed by many. The joy of his presence will be dearly missed by those closest to him. A graveside service for the close family members was held on Friday, December 13, 2002. Myles will be laid to rest at the Aspen Hill Cemetery in Jackson, Wyoming. In lieu of flowers, the Borshell Family would appreciate donations be given to the International Myeloma Foundation by calling 800-452-CURE. Visit Guest Book at www.suntimes.com

I think of Myles and his family quite often. Myles and I were friends since the age of 5 and lived next door to each other till we both graduated from Sullivan High School. He was a great guy and we spent many many hours playing monopoly together. If Karen or Ken or his boys read this I would appreciate them contacting me as I would like to keep in touch. Phone 561 213 4958. Norman Opper.

The loving relationship of Karen & Myles touch my heart during the 60's and remains there. Myles lives on in my heart through fond memories of our acquaintance and his art, a charcoal portrait which I have always cherished.

I lived across the street (Ashland) from Myles throughout high school, and went to Hebrew school with him. We were friends and classmates. I was saddened to hear of his passing, but pleased to read what a wonderful life he had during the many, many years since I last saw him. He was a nice guy as a kid, too.
