Morton Steinberg Obituary

Steinberg, Morton 74, of Las Vegas, passed away Monday, July 19, 2010. He was born Nov. 24, 1935, in Chicago, and was a seven-year resident of Nevada. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Morton was a loving husband to Gail Bearnice Steinberg; a devoted father to his children, Richard and Michelle; and best friend to his son, Richard. Morton and Gail operated a Chicago eatery that was honored and loved by everyone. Inside or along the sidewalk cafe, Mort's Deli provided a place for all of Chicago's work force to eat and gather in all seasons. Morton is survived by his son, Richard Steinberg of Las Vegas; and daughter and son-in-law, Michelle Steinberg-Waraftig and Eric Waraftig of Studio City, Calif. Private services were held in Las Vegas. A memorial service will also be held at a later date in Chicago. Morton was embraced and respected by many for his hospitality and caring nature. "Mort and Gail Welcome You" is now inscribed in Heaven.

Dear Gail. It was with great sadness that I read in this morning's Sun Times of Mort's passing. The times that Mort & you and Mel & I spent together were too few and too far in-between; but we sure did have a lot of laughs and fun. I think Mort and Mel were cut out of the same cloth. I lost Melvin last August 29th. This is a difficult time for you and the kids, I know. Please will you let me know when the Memorial Service in Chicago will be held. I would like to be there. G_d bless you and take care of you. With deepest sympathy and love, Roberta

Richie, We were so very, very sorry to hear of Mort's passing. Steven and I have many fond thoughts and Mort was respected and loved by all who knew him. Steven met your Dad in 1968 and spent many afternoons talking with him and your Grandmother. I remember when Steven and I started dating, my father's first stop was to see your Dad. He was on Broadway then and my father wanted to know his opinion of Steven. We're married 38 years...Thanks Mort! He was a legend in his own time. We'll all miss him. Sincerely, Rickie & Steven Strauss

Our Blessed Friend Richie:
All you new found family members from Mountain View send our deepest condolences. Cindy, Edith, JoAnn, Curtis and all the rest of the gang. We are really worried about you and want to be there for you as you were for us while our loved ones were ill. Somehow we did not manage to exchange phone numbers and JoAnn can't find where she put your number.
My number is 239-7291, and JoAnn thinks you have her number programed into your phone. Both my mother and father have asked about you. I was so honored that you took me up to meet your dad and I know that right now your whole world has been pulled out from under you. Please contact when you are ready and know that there are people who really care from the deepest parts of our hearts.
With special love and prayers for your father and you.
