Milton Newport Obituary

Milton Corbett Newport, Jr. (Milt) passed away peacefully on January 31st, 2010 at the Bellingham Health Care Center. Milt was born in Chehalis, WA on April 10th, 1923. He was the son of Milton Corbett Newport, Sr. and Lee Newport. The family moved to Bellingham from Chehalis when Milt was a child. He attended Whatcom Junior High School and graduated from Bellingham High School. Milt married Suda Jeanne Newport, daughter of Malcolm F. and Suda Owen. Milt and Suda had three children: Jeffrey Owen Newport, Milton Corbett Newport, III (Corky) and Mary K. Newport. They are the grandparents of Amy Catherine Newport, Elizabeth Owen Newport, Jake Newport and Chase Newport. Milt served in the United States Air Force during World War II. After the war he became a barber and worked for many years at The Bellingham National Barber Shop. Milt enjoyed bowling and golf. He taught Suda to golf when they were in their 50's. He was a pretty good instructor as she became a good golfer, very quickly. He also coached the boy's Little League baseball teams having been a ball player himself when in high school. Milt was a member of the Masonic Lodge #151 and the Bellingham Golf & Country Club. Jeff, Corky, and Mary K. always looked forward to Monday afternoons. Being a barber, Milt had Monday's off. He'd greet the kids as they got off the bus, then either take them to Owen's Grocery (Suda's parent's store) for a treat or take them home where he'd have Hostess Cupcakes waiting! For the past few years Milt and Suda walked their dear dog, Laddie, each day on the Fairhaven Park Trails. Milt was a good guy; kind and gracious with a sly sense of humor and a huge heart. He was a true gift to his wife, kids, and grandkids. He'll be missed, but leaves a wonderful legacy of goodness and decency. Donations may be made to the Bellingham Fire Department. At his request, there will be no services. You may view photos of Milt and share memories with the family at www.westfordfuneralhome.com Westford Family Funeral Home & Cremation Broadway at Eldridge

Corky and I were football and basketball teammates at Whatcom. That is when I first met Milt and Suda Newport. I found both to be as friendly and gracious as any couple could be, and always felt extremely welcome in their home while hanging out with Corky and Jeff. I never had a “store-bought” haircut until I was in high school. Before that, my Mother had always cut my hair at home. When the day came for me to go downtown for my first professional haircut, I recalled what a terrific guy Milt was, and decided that if anyone besides my Mother was going to come at my head with a pair of scissors, it was going to be Corky’s Dad. Thirty years later when I moved back to Bellingham, I went to town to get a haircut. When the young hairstylist finished, I looked in the mirror and with great satisfaction remarked, “Just like downtown.” The stylist asked me what I meant by that. I told her the story of how pleased I was the first time I had gone downtown to get my first pro haircut from Milt Newport. And that since, whenever someone gave me a great haircut, I would express my appreciation by saying “Just like downtown,” and think of Milt. I’ve had many good haircuts over the years, and every time I have thought about what a pleasure it was to know Milt Newport.

To the Newport Family,
I was sorry to hear of the passing of Milt. He was such a kind, friendly man whom everyone liked. I know my dad enjoyed playing golf with him on Sunday mornings a great deal and I enjoyed the times when our families did things together when we were kids. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
Sincerely,
