Melvin Roy Obituary

Melvin Thomas Roy, 78, of State Street, Plainville, died on Saturday, April 30, 2005 at the Maples Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wrentham. He was the beloved husband of Audrey Marie (Cross) Roy to whom he was married on March 30, 1957.

Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on September 26, 1926, he was a son of the late Leon and Elise (Lavoie) Roy. After his birth, he and his family moved to his parents’ native land of Canada. Mr. Roy was then raised and educated in Canada and served in the Canadian Armed Forces prior to returning to the United States. Upon returning to the United States he served with the United States Army.

For 32 years, Mr. Roy was employed as a cutter and engraver for Creed Rosary. It is there were he met his good friend, Louie Larson, whom they and their families would spend much time together along with another friend, Kenneth Harris.

The three couples would travel often and visited such places as Nashville, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia and Las Vegas as well as day trips to Maine and New Hampshire.

Following his “retirement” he worked for the Highlander Laundry on Elm Street in North Attleboro as an attendant for two years.

Mr. Roy was a “quiet, unassuming, family man”. He would prefer to listen to conversations as opposed to actively participating in them.

He was a longtime communicant of St. Martha’s Church, Plainville where he was also a member of the church bowling league for many years.

He was a volunteer coach for the P.A.L. Little League. A lover of country music, his favorite musicians were Hank Williams and Hank Snow.

Times spent with his grandchildren were treasured and they recall going to the movies and visits to Capron Park with their beloved grandfather.

Mr. Roy enjoyed the Christmas holiday, cookouts, playing cards – especially, poker and cribbage and trips to the former Foxboro Racetrack, Plainridge, Lincoln Park and Foxwoods.

His family will remember his love for sports and watching television especially baseball, hockey and football.

In addition to his wife of 48 years, he leaves five children: Michael R. Roy in California; Catherine J. Buckman of North Attleboro; Gary T. Roy of Plainville; John L. Roy of Plainville and Linda M. Bridges of Mansfield; 14 grandchildren; one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Leonard Roy and Jean Roy.
