Mary Schoen Obituary

Schoen, Mary Angela (nee Penkala), 63, passed away peacefully December 26th, at home after a brief illness in the presence of her loving family. Beloved wife of Alan Charles, devoted mother of Cecily Anne and Valerie (Ken Swiatkowski, DVM), DVM, cherished sister of Dolores Penkala, daughter of the late Anne and Edward Penkala, doting "Mom" to devoted miniature poodle, Corky and incorrigible standard poodle, Quincy. Mary earned a B.A. in Theatre from Mundelein College and her M.A. from Northwestern University. She returned to Mundelein to teach Theatre and Public Speaking and except for a child-rearing sabbatical in the early 70's, remained there until her retirement in 1991. Mary and Alan found immense enjoyment in their post-career lives together, spending time with their many friends, traveling the world on luxury cruises, frolicking in their hot tub and raising their poodles. Their 33rd wedding anniversary would have been December 27th. Memorial service pending. Floral donations accepted or memorials to Gilda's Club, 312-464-9900. We are so very very sorry to hear of Mary's crossing the Rainbow Bridge . . . a cyberfriend from CanineL, whose stories of Violet the Airedale entertained us all . . . our Violet and Misha the Airedales will be meeting her across the Bridge.

My deepest condolences to Mary's family. Mary will be deeply missed in the Canine-L community, but something tells me that there is much joy at The Rainbow Bridge with her appearance there. Be comforted in the thought that Mary made the world a better place and left many happy hearts for her having been with us.

To all of Mary's family and friends, my deepest and most sincere sympathy! I have known Mary as a cyber-friend from the Canine-L list for more than a decade, and will miss hearing from her and the "Poodle Boys" very much, but I know how much more you who lived with her and loved her will miss her, and wish I could find better words to tell you how sorry I am to hear she has gone from your lives in the here and now. I am sure that you will, however, meet again, as will we all. My love and sympathy are with you!

To everyone in Mary's Family:

She was such a wonderful person. Always smiling, always laughing, always so sweet. I looked forward to going to her house to go over my wedding invitations, because Mary, Alan & Dolores made me laugh with their stories from their trips, their advice on cruises and she was so excited for me. I loved it when she called me "Pretty Julie". I will never forget her. She was truly special.

Dear Alan, Valerie, Cecily, and Delores,

I am so sorry for your loss of wife, mother, and sister. Mary was a wonderful person and we all loved her at SSKHS. She brought laughter into all of our lives. She always looked so quiet and innocent, but she was quite the character. We all had a great time giving the nuns a hard time.

The reunion at your home was wonderful and Mary will certainly be missed if we have another. My love and sympathy to each and every one of you.
