MARY KRACKENBERGER Obituary

Krackenberger, Mary Patricia (née Welch) age 69, died on Saturday, August 1, 2015. She was the beloved wife of John; loving mother of Katie (Scott Baker), Michael, and Peter (Christine) Krackenberger; dearest grandmother of Ryan and Colin Hegg. Born August 11, 1945 to Frank and Frieda Welch and younger sister of Dennis and Kathrine Welch, and "sister" of Amy Thompson, she was a lifelong resident of Skokie, IL. In 1967, Mary traveled to India, where she volunteered as a member of the U.S. Peace Corps. She attended John Marshall Law School, where she met her husband-to-be. Mary and John were married on February 6, 1971, and graduated from law school in 1973. Mary was a practicing attorney, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many, and active member of the St. Lambert Church community. Despite battling cancer for nearly 10 years, Mary remained active and in great spirits, traveling with her husband, frequently visiting the Chicago Botanic Garden, snuggling with her dog, Jasper, and spending time with her many friends and family who will miss her dearly. According to Mary's wishes, her body is being donated to the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois so that future doctors may have the opportunity to further their medical knowledge. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 8, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Lambert Catholic Church, 8148 Karlov Ave., Skokie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Misericordia Heart of Mercy, 6300 N. Ridge Ave., Chicago, IL 60660 (www.misericordia.org), where Mary was a volunteer. My belated, deepest sympathy to Jack and Mary's children and grandchildren. I only heard of her death today. Mary and I were friends from high school, and saw each other through the seventies prior to my move to South Dakota in '76. We gradually lost touch, but I did get to exchange a few words with her at 50th Reunion. We only moved back to the area last year. I wish I had known on time to attend her funeral. I so admired her courage these last years as well as her many accomplishments.

I remember Mary as a young, idealistic Peace Corps Volunteer in India. She gave to others with compassion and love.
We lost touch through the years, but I always remembered Mary. She was so special.
Helen Keller once wrote,"What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us".
Sincere condolence to your family and friends.

Dear Jack and family,

So sad to hear of Mary's passing and sorry for the pain and loss all of you are feeling. Mary was a wonderful person I always admired and respected. I will forever remember our famous victory in softball where our team was down 10 runs in the bottom of the final inning and Mary gave them her pep-up speech. She told them not to give up, we could still win if everyone just got on base, be patient, watch for pitch you like. Well they did just that and we won. To me this is how Mary lived her life. Never giving up, being patient and encouraging to those around her. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Our prayers are with Mary's family. I will always remember our little chats when you
and John were walking Kasper.
Always a smile on your face.
It was our pleasure to have known you and to
have you and your family as neighbors.

My love and prayers are with all of you. I'm sorry I cannot be there for Mary's Mass. I cherish the times we shared together in recent years and all the phone calls. I always admired Mary and feel truly blessed that God made us cousins.

Krackenberger Family-

I was deeply saddened to hear of Mary's passing.I am comforted because I am one of the lucky ones whose life was touched by this very special woman. I join you and the many others who will miss her, but I remain grateful still for having known her. May God Bless you all!

As the Irish are wont to say,
"she was a grand lady." It was a privilege to know Mary.
