To the Ganley family
In 1975 I arrived in town from Florida with her son. I was 19, no job, little money, and had no place to stay. She, who loved to talk, and her husband, who loved not to talk, welcomed me to her home till I figured a way to get out on my own. She talked not a word without that strong brogue. Sometimes she pronounced words like I'd never heard them before. 2 days later was Mother's Day, and the whole family went to one of those big restaurants in NW Chicagoland somewhere. And I sat at the same table with them. I wasn't used to family much back then, but it did not escape me how welcoming they all were to me, a stranger. I stayed about a month.
Years later, I read that with the Irish when they ask you to stay for dinner, and you say no, they feed you anyway. In much of the US, when you're asked, and you say no, you simply don't get no damned dinner then. I'll never forget Mrs. Ganley's Irishness, and I'll never forget those dinners.

Just read on the OLV Class of '67 site that your mom passed away. My deepest sympathy to all of you. Your mom was on an airplane coming home from Ireland back in '71 (?) and she was talking to my grandma and somehow my grandma showed her my picture (I had just graduated or was about to and my grandma had my H.S. picture) and your mom said, "Why that is Mary O'Malley!" And my grandma said, "That's my granddaughter!" What a small world. As heartbreaking as it was at John's passing a few months back, it was nice to see all of you. God bless and again, my deepest sympathy.
