Mary Doke Obituary

Doke, Mary Rose Harlan 93, of Evanston, Illinois, and Sanibel Island, Florida, died peacefully September 30, 2007, in the Foster Pavilion of the Presbyterian Homes. She was the daughter of the late Elvin H. Harlan and the late Flossie May Harlan, nee Hurst. Her sister Dorothy, as well as brothers Robert and Gene, preceded her in death. Her brother Warren survives. Mary Rose attended Greencastle High School, Greencastle, IN, and Purdue University. She graduated from Purdue with a degree in Home Economics and Physical Education. She taught high school in Indiana before marrying the late Ernest G. Doke, in 1938, with whom she shared 67 devoted years. He was the former Executive Vice President and Treasurer of MacLean-Fogg Company in Mundelein, IL. Mary Rose was a resident of Winnetka for over 50 years, as well as a winter resident of Sanibel Island, Florida for over 25 years. She was a former long-time Board Member of Lake Bluff Children's Home/ChildServ, a former officer of the Winnetka Women's Club, and served as a docent at J.N. "Ding" Darling Wildlife Preserve on Sanibel Island, FL. She enjoyed being a founding member of the Captiva Island Yacht Club with her husband Ernie. She loved travel, her time on Sanibel Island, but most of all devoting herself to her husband and family. Her friends knew her as a vivacious and loyal friend. Mary Rose is survived by three children: Dianne Moss (Jim); Sandy Woleben (Mike); and Prilla Anderson (Jerry); ten grandchildren: Katherine, Anne Marie, Carrie, Sarah, Amy, Jenny, Matthew, Kara, Kate and Brian; three great grandchildren: Christopher, Logan, Megan, with one more on the way. In lieu of flowers, contributions to either the Chicago Botanic Garden, the J.N. "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge, or Hospice of the North Shore would be appreciated. A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, October 9th at 3 p.m. in the Elliott Chapel at the Presbyterian Homes, 3131 Simpson, Evanston. Arrangements by Wm. H. Scott Funeral Home 847-251-8200.
