Mary Burke Obituary

Burke, Mary S. (nee Vos) age 106 years, Immigrated to the USA from Amsterdam, Holland in April 1908 with her Mother Sophia and Brother Peter. The family settled in the Roseland area and Mary lived her entire life on the south side of Chicago. Mary's father Jacobus Vos was an employee of the Pullman Co. and Mary worked at Voss Equipment Inc, her Brother Peter's company. Mary is the beloved wife of the late Frank J. Burke, Sr.; loving mother of the late Frank & Loretta; cherished grandmother of Shelly, Dale Burke of Seattle, WA and Stephen and David Brown. Mary enjoyed the 6 years she spent living at the Pointe of Kilpatrick. Vitas Hospice was wonderful and helped to make Mary's final days peaceful. Mary lived a long pleasant life, always friendly and a true inspiration to those she touched. Arrangements entrusted to Andrew J. McGann & Son Funeral Home.

Ray Greabe

November 13, 2011

My wife, Dolores, and I offer condolences to the Peter Voss Family and the Burke grandchildren on the passing of Mary Voss Burke.

My name is Ray Greabe, son of John Greabe and Catherine Devins Greabe. My mother initially met Mary when they were employees at the old Chicago Surface Lines. A friendship developed to the extent that Mary and Frank stood as witnesses to my mother's and father's wedding. I still have a picture of the four of them in full wedding regalia.

I have fond memories of Mary, Frank and their children visiting us in the Lincoln Square area of Chicago. In past years, I have had a few pleasant conversations and Christmas card exchanges with Mary. But that was some time ago. I remember distinctly Mary's gracious words about her brother, Peter, and how appreciative she was for his years of kindness.

I recall Mary as an always good-natured and upbeat person who made the best of life and its challenges.
