Mary Beatty Obituary

Beatty (nee O'Grady), Mary Therese

Mary T. Beatty, daughter of the late Austin and Beatrice O'Grady (nee Lyons), born in Chicago on May 22, 1930, died peacefully, surrounded by family, at Oak Trace Senior Living in the care of Angels Grace Hospice on December 14, 2024.

Beloved wife of the late John J. Beatty.

Mother to Therese (Glenn Smith), James (Stephanie), Catherine, John (Donna), Joseph (Tiffany), Nancy Farber (niece).

Proud Grandmother of Seth, John, Sarah, Brooke, Kristine, Tom, Therese, Andrea, Austin, Kevin, Jeffrey, Bridget, Karen, Michael, Max, Ella, Josh, and Lisa.

Great grandmother to Keller, Mason, Aris, Connor, Griffin, Logan, Harper, Evelyn, Liam and Colum.

Survivors include brother Michael (Jane) O'Grady.

Where it is written above "Beloved wife of John J. Beatty," we mean beloved. Mary was everything to John and he did all he could to make her life grand, and to prepare for her life after he passed. And Mary in kind was a loving support to John throughout their lives together. A great partnership and marriage.

Mary loved visiting with all those she knew and there was never a party or gathering that she didn't want to attend and stay to the very end. And then talk with those who remained in the hallway or parking lot as she exited. John, on the other hand, when it was time to leave, he wanted to leave. And so, this conflict played out many times over the years, not really a conflict at all because John knew these conversations brought joy to Mary, and he willingly, and at the same time grudgingly, watched it play out. And the rest of us saw it and joyfully observed, knowing what was happening.

Mary's large O'Grady and Lyons families brought joy to her every day … phone calls with her siblings, cousins, in-laws – everyone. She missed them very much as the years passed and they departed us.

Mary was involved in many social groups throughout her life. "Club" was a group of women from high school that stayed connected for decades, meeting regularly at rotating houses. Mary also loved her neighbors, and friends from the St. Bede Altar Guild, St. Laurence Mother's Club, and Ridge Country Club. "Having a coffee" was a real thing on Keeler Ave in Scottsdale.

What cannot be ignored is Mary's Catholic faith which permeated her life and her connections. If Mary heard of someone going through a difficult time, you can be sure that that name was written on a small slip of paper and placed in her "God Box" so that she could pray for that person and say a rosary on their behalf. If you are reading this notice, you likely have had your name in that box, no better place for it when struggling.

Visitation Wednesday, December 18th from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Chapel prayers Thursday, December 19th, 9:30 a.m. at the KERRY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CARE CENTER, 7020 W. 127TH Street, Palos Heights proceeding to Saint Alexander Church, Mass 10 a.m. Interment Saint Mary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita Support, Inc., at amcsupport.org.

This is the greatest obituary I've read in a long time because it captures my golfing buddy Mary so perfectly. Your mom was a joy to be with always and I enjoyed our many hours of conversation on the course. I too am a talker and my poor husband is like your dad. May all your good memories of both your mom and dad help you through this sad time.
