Salmon, Martin Arthur 84, of Clarendon Hills, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 5, 2006. Martin was born June 28, 1922, in Detroit, Michigan. He received a BS in Civil Engineering and a PhD in Applied Mechanics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He worked as an engineer, specializing in nuclear power plant design, for IIT Research Institute and Sargent and Lundy. He possessed a piercing intellect and an uncanny aptitude for using complex mathematics to solve formidable engineering problems. An avid golfer, he was often seen on the course in all weather, working on his short game with determination and hope. Martin was devoted to his family, and will be remembered for his wry humor and gentle but concise advice. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marion (nee Baker); his daughter Betsy (Peter) Miller; his grandchildren, Elizabeth (Greg) Laurence, Martin A. (Katie) Miller, Susan Miller, and Carolyn Miller; his great granddaughter, Gretchen Laurence; a sister, Joan Salmon Hallett: a brother-in-law, Hillier L. Baker; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 1:00 P.M. at Grace Episcopal Church, 120 E. 1st St, Hinsdale, followed by a reception. Memorials may be made to the Mayo Foundation for Lung Research, 200 1st St. SW, Rochester, MN 55905 or St. Thomas Hospice, 8230 S. Madison, Burr Ridge, IL, 60527.
