To Mary:

Again, let us tell you how sorry we are on the passing of your sister. I know you were close.

We remember growing up across the street from you and how our families would get together on Christmas morning after opening presents. I think the first morning we were all in pajamas. Those are special memories.

We will pray for you to have peace during these difficult days.

To Toby: I do not know you, but send our condolences on the death of your mother. Judy Merwald

Dear Toby and Family,

I was so sadden to hear of your mother's passing. I am an old friend from high school and next door neighbor on Longwood Drive where your mother lived. Toby don't know if you remember me, but I have some pictures of your mother that I would love to send to you from the year 1962, but I don't know where to send them or how to contact you. I have wonderful memories of your mother and know she will be deeply missed. Again my deepest sympathy to you and your family.

I had the pleasure of working with Martha for many years on Michigan Ave and spent several warm summer evenings on her terrace. I will always remember Martha and her spirit fondly. I have not experienced the loss of a mother so I do not know the pain you must be feeling, I pray you are given strength.

Martha was such a lovely person who was always thinking of others. Her tireless dedication to helping those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and finding a cure was an inspiration to all who knew her.

I am so sorry to hear of this loss. Martha contacted me several months ago about my interest in the Chicago Chapter of the ALSA. She called me to let me know that the chapter was indeed forming, and asked if I was still interested. I was very interested, as I had just lost my mother unexpectedly to ALS in June 2004. I was never able to meet Martha in person, but I have heard so many good things about her commitment to reach out to people with ALS and thier families. I am so sorry that she will not be with us to personally experience what she has begun. I know, however, that her legacy will live in the work that this chapter will do.

My thoughts are with her family.
