Lois Hauselman Obituary

Hauselman, Lois has left a legacy of a thousand best friends from kindergarten through Sullivan High, University of Wisconsin, and beyond. Lois was a copywriter, tour guide, writer, editor ("Other Voices"), artist, tennis player, choir member, runner, and biker. She was the first woman president of Anshe Emet Synagogue and Lincoln Park Tennis Association. Lois was an inspiration and muse to Marty, her husband of 54 years, her children, Jamie and Rob Reynolds, Julie and Ron Sachs, and Nicholas and Dr. Lisa. Adored LoLo of her grandchildren, Sophie and Moses Hauselman and Noa and Orli Sachs. Lois was the sunshine in the lives of not only her family and friends, but to their children and grandchildren who adored her as a surrogate grandmother and great grandmother. Everyone remembers and cherishes their time with Lois, and will be saddened not to see her wonderful smile, and the way she listened. And yes, she could sometimes give advice and words that were direct and critical, but were always pronounced lovingly. She was the daughter of the late Morris and Helen Dubin, and the late Bessie and Sam Hauselman, sister of Charlotte, Sherwin and Linda. Lois will be missed by all. Service Friday 11:30AM at Anshe Emet Synagogue, 3751 N. Broadway, Chicago, IL 60613. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lois's name may be made to Anshe Emet Synagogue. Arrangements by Chicago Jewish Funerals - Skokie Chapel, 847.229.8822, www.cjfinfo.com

Lois was one of my first writing mentors. Always encouraging, always loving. She invited me to her home with a few relatives and friends, taking nuts and olives and crackers from the cabinets to create a makeshift hors doeurve table, treating me as if she'd known me all her life when we'd met only a few times. I just learned of her death today and I cry for her family and myself at the loss.

This is crushing. Lois was larger than life itself. The best tennis player (I could never beat her). The best writer (and the most supportive of other writers). The funniest person in the room (Could make me cry, so funny was she). The most human person in the room (She knew; she just knew). The most compassionate. The most understanding. I haven't seen her in decades since I moved away from Chicago but she looms large as Important People in My Life. This is crushing. Love to her family.

I loved Lois so much. Even in my first moments of knowing her, she never treated me as a stranger. She was the kindest soul. I miss her dearly.

Sorry to have read of Lois Hauselmans passing. She was the editor of and one of the founders of OTHER VOICES magazine...an outstanding magazine for short story writers and may still be in circulation. When I had aspirations to write she actually met with me as a tutor of sorts. I still may pull off a novel - the last one ... well ...give me above average marks for trying. Dan U.

No "help finding the right words" will do for a person as uniquely gifted as Lois, nor for a family who loved her so dearly. As I read the obit that captures her so beautifully, and the messages that precede mine, I agreed wholeheartedly and cannot improve. Lois was a great favorite of my mother's (Grace MacKenzie), who taught her at Kilmer, so I became fond of her even before we eventually met. My heart is aching at her loss, and my sympathy and prayers for you, Marty, and your children and close friends, will now be joined to my wonderful memories of Lois.

Dear Lois, who loved to paint her grandchildren, more than just
about anything. (Although I do remember her mother posing for our class too!) And she always looked so zippy, driving that hot little convertible. She was a delightful person and will be missed.

Lois's face would light up with the warmest smile whenever she saw you --- as if you made her day. She was artistic, creative, and made the best brisket [with beer, think!] which we enjoyed when our children went to Anshe Emet Day School and we formed a Shabbos Dinner group because our daughters Julie, Rachel, and Elana [Porat] were close friends. And soon the Mozes's and their wonderful children joined us. Lois's light brightened many lives. My love and condolences go out to Marty and all of their children and grandchildren. May her memory be for a blessing. Marcy Goldberg

To the family of My Friend Lois,

From the beginning of our meeting, we greeted each other with a smile and a hug. No one was a stranger to Lois. I will always remember our last hug this past August, our embrace was stronger and lasted longer. Just yesterday, I was selecting a card to encourage her as she had often done for me and to just let her know I was thinking of her. I will miss getting her random emails telling me to be encouraged and that I was doing a great job, that would close with as many oxox's as she thought it would take to express her love an appreciation for you.

I will miss your earthly presence but will forever hold dear our time together and hugs. Take your rest, my friend. Toni oxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

My Aunt Jacque Schwartz introduced and made the shitach between Lois and Martin those many years ago. My mother and father, Charlotte and Melvin Levin, will welcome her with open arms and no doubt a joke and a song. And all of us who she touched should be grateful today for having been a part of a life well spent!
