Lewis Weinberg Obituary

Weinberg, Lewis C. 93, is survived by his children, Barbara (Dennis) Kessler, David (Jerry Newton), and Daniel Weinberg, grandfather of Keith (Lisa), Arthur (Wendy), and Eric (Sharapat) Kessler; Mindy (Kirk) Uhrlaub and Brian (Elaine) Weinberg; Zac and Abby Weinberg, David and Carrie Newton, great-grandfather of 13 and special friend of Janice Gronvold. Former co-chairman and president of Fel-Pro Inc. in Skokie, Illinois, Lewis C. Weinberg, died of pancreatic cancer. Under his leadership Fel-Pro, a manufacturer of gaskets, packings and oil seals for automotive and industrial uses, was recognized for many years as one of the best employers in the United States because of its innovative and vast variety of benefits offered to its employees. Lewis Weinberg experienced more than 60 years in management, business development and community service. He was responsible for many award winning business and community programs. Since his retirement in 1998, he was frequently called upon as a guest speaker and advisor in his areas of expertise. Lewis Weinberg was born in Chicago and received his education at Northwestern University and Illinois Institute of Technology as well as a certificate in advanced management from the University of Chicago. During his career he lectured at the United States International University, Northwood University, Northwestern University School of Management, the University of Chicago and the American Management Association. He received the "Outstanding Business Leaders Award" from Northwoods University, Industry Week's "Excellence in Management Award" for outstanding efforts in management and labor relations, and the "Walk of Fame" award from Skokie, Illinois. In addition to industry activities, Lewis Weinberg founded and owned Sho-En Outdoor Sculpture Center in Ramona, California - a fifty-acre setting showcasing original contemporary art for residential, public and corporate art collections. He founded The Musical Instrument Bank in Chicago which supplied musical instruments to disadvantaged students in Chicago public and parochial schools. Until his death he served as President of the Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park, a public collection of over 60 large-scale contemporary sculptures along McCormick Blvd. in Skokie, Il. Other positions Lewis Weinberg held during his life included Board Member of Urban Gateways, Vice-President of the Lake Point Tower Board of Directors in Chicago, Council Chair of the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Northwestern University, and President of the San Diego Country Estates Board of Directors in Ramona, California. Lewis Weinberg was respected and admired by the employees of Fel-Pro, a connoisseur and collector of fine art, and an avid listener of classical music. He continued learning, exercising, and managing his life until the day he died. Lewis loved his family and left them as well as the countless other people whose lives he impacted a legacy in how to be a successful, generous and caring person. A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 16th, 4 p.m., at Congregation Solel, 1301 Clavey Road, Highland Park, 60035. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in memory of Lewis C. Weinberg be made to the: Michael Rolfe Pancreatic Cancer Foundation (910 W. Van Buren St., 3rd Floor, Chicago, IL, 60607) where they will be used for research to develop an early detection test for diagnosing pancreatic cancer. For info 847-433-3555

During the time when my father, Sam Mages, was director of the Musical Instrument Bank, I met Lewis Weinberg at his office at FelPro. He impressed me with his personal warmth, his many interests and his engaging conversation. My parents considered him to be a good friend. My condolences to Barbara Kessler and the rest of his family. I know that he will be greatly missed.

Lewis Weinberg's Musical Instrument Bank was not only of great benefit to all the Chicago schoolchildren who received instruments, it was also of inestimable benefit to my father, Samuel Mages, who was the director of the instrument bank. Working for the Bank enriched and fulfilled my dad's retirement life beyond
measure. Please accept my condolences on your loss of a wonderful man.

To Barbara Kessler and all the Weinberg family: I was saddened to hear of your recent loss. I did not know Lewis Weinberg directly, but my father, Sam Mages, often spoke highly of him and the Weinberg family. Barbara, your and your father's generosity as you conceived, organized and funded the Musical Instrument Bank not only brought an enriched cultural life to so many Chicago area students, but brought joy and great satisfaction to my father as he worked with the MIB during his retirement years. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the Weinberg family. Lewis Weinberg's life will touch the lives of so many others for years to come. Joyce Mages Follman

My life was truely blessed the day I was hired at Fel-Pro. After being retired for the last 15 years I am so glad that I attended Fel-Pro's 90th Open House and spoke with Mr. Weinberg. I am so proud to have been part of the Fel-Pro family and the legacy he left behind.

We were so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Weinberg. Our husband/father, Tom Tsugawa worked at Fel-Pro for many, many years and had nothing but respect and fond memories of Mr. Weinberg and all of the wonderful people who he worked with at Fel-Pro. We can remember attending many of the family events held by Fel-Pro, from the open houses to the picnics at Triple R. Fel-Pro was truly a family and as a testament, when Tom passed away two years ago, we were overwhelmed by the number of former Fel-Pro colleagues who came to pay their respects even though he had been retired from the company for several years. To have created such a wonderful legacy is a blessing. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Weinberg's family.

It was an absolute honor to know Lewis. I will miss hearing him ask me, "So how's it going, kid?" We all mourn a great great man who touched so many.

I will always remember Lew as a deeply caring, intelligent, and people-smart individual. I will carry his sensitivity to the social concerns and individual lives of people whom he has touched. He is a role model for personal integrity and putting the interests of his fellow man at the top of his list. Lew, I still think of you after all these years away, and will always remember to keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Our hearts are heavy with the loss of this truly wonderful man. Because of him (Fel-Pro) our lives have been filled with abundance, happiness and security. Mr. Weinberg was kind, caring and generous and his spirit of compassion will never be forgotten. He will be missed.

It was through Fel-Pro, Inc. that our family has been able to succeed in the United States. My father (Carmen Garcia) and uncle (Luis Garcia, Sr.) began their employment at the Skokie plant upon being referred by Uncle Gabriel. It would be the last job that Dad had in his life. He took full advantage of all the benefits that were available, from summer camp to some of the next generation of the Garcia family working either as summer and/or permanent employees.

Our prayers are with your family.

The best time of my working years is with Felpro. I remember Mr Wienberg going around the plant saying hello and saying good morning to all with a big smile. Many times during christmas meeting he will announce a big surprice giving all employees some extra money for Christmas holiday.

I will always remember the glint of his eye whenever he had a vision for a new product or concept. He was an inspiration to me.

It has been an honor and privilege to be part of the Fel-Pro family that Mr. Weinberg and Mr. Lehman made possible. From the beginning, when my father Art Cohen joined the family, through summer employment for myself and my brothers, throughout my own and my husband's employments, summer camp for my kids, and now my dad's retirement, Fel-Pro has been part of our lives for the last 40+ years. Mr. Weinberg, and the Weinberg and Lehman families made it all possible. Thank you, Mr. Weinberg. You will be greatly missed by those of us who knew you and looked forward to your morning walks through the shop.
May your life and memory be as inspirational for future generations as you have been for me and my family.

Mr. Weiberg will be missed, he is truly one of the great ones. I am thankful that I have been able to work for such a wonderful company for the past 27 plus years. This would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of Mr. Weinberg and Mr. Lehman.
