Kathleen McGury Obituary

McGury, Kathleen

The Honorable Kathleen (Kate) McGury passed away on January 16, 2025. Beloved daughter of the late Honorable John and Marilyn McGury and sister to Carol, Susan, Marilyn (Gregg) Baldwin, and Ellen (Charles) Stone. Devoted aunt and second mother to Jack Baldwin, Christina, Ellie, and John Hease. Cherished cousin of Peggy (nee Maloney) (John) Pasquini, the late Sharon, the late Thomas Maloney, John Pasquini, Pat (Linda) and Noah Pasquini. Kate's warm relationships with her extended family and dear friends meant the world to her.

Kate was a vibrant, accomplished, loving and much-loved woman. From a young age, her passion for languages and the arts was apparent. Kate excelled at everything she chose to do, and she chose to do a lot. A dedicated professional and a lifelong learner, she still found time to have fun. 1995 was an auspicious year for Kate in two important arenas: she became a judge and an aunt that year and fully embraced those roles. Her many professional achievements include over 15 years as an Assistant State's Attorney and 25 years as a Circuit Court Judge. Kate's caring and generous spirit remains with all of us who love her.

Funeral services 10:15am Saturday, January 25th, 2025, from McInerney Central Chapel, 4635 S. Wallace St., Chicago, IL, to St. Gabriel Church, 4522 S. Wallace St. Mass of the Resurrection 11:00am.

Visitation will take place on Friday, January 24th, 2025, 3:00pm-8:00pm.

I just learned of Kate´s passing. I knew her for years from our time spent together in classes at the Alliance Francaise de Chicago.
She was so kind, so much fun, and always up for a French movie and dinner. Sending deepest condolences to her family.

I was her guitar instructor at the Old Town School of Folk Music. We had a lot of laughs and we were friends. I shall miss her easy laugh.

My memories of Kathleen , were many Christmas parties with her Mom, always enjoyed seeing them both. Later I was a violations Ciordinator for Cook County Enviironmental Control. I was presenting violations of our ordinance. I will always remember how great I felt when I walked into the courtroom to find Kathleen presiding over my call! As soon as she saw me she would say Mrs OHara are you ready to go, I loved it and her! She was always such a happy lady and was always asking how everyone was! What a special friend and kind human being. Prayers for my friend

I just found out the sad news of Kathy's passing. She always brought sunshine with her wherever she was. Kathy had the most beautiful smile and was a true beauty, in every way. I wish I'd have had the privilege of seeing her more often and getting to know her better. I love that we shared a LB connection, although ironically rarely ran into her there, as well as being a law school buddy. May she rest in peace with family & loved ones. With sincere sympathy, Suellen

McGury Family - Please accept my condolences on your loss. I met Kathy during our overlapping time in the SAO. She always had a reputation as a great trial lawyer. During our overlapping time on the bench that reputation continued as a great judge. It was always a pleasure running into her at various functions or seminars, she had a terrific personality, and always seemed just so upbeat. As others have noted, she will be missed, but not forgotten.

I first met Kathy - now Kate - in the late 1970's through a mutual friend. Kathy was so funny, engaging, thoughtful, and kind. I got to know her even more when we both worked in the State's Attorney's Office. Kathy was such a lovely woman and we will all miss her warm smile and generous spirit!

My eyes have stopped crying, but my soul continues to weep! Kate was the best of the best; intelligent, sophisticated but down to earth, loving, caring, giving,, dedicated to her family, honorable and honest to a fault

My condolences. I had the privilege of being Kathy's partner in a felony trial court & found to be a bright, eager-to-learn & thoroughly pleasant partner. She went on to excel as she progressed up the ranks in the Office before becoming a fine judge, who made me proud of my small role in her progress. May all the mourners be comforted with the memory of her upbeat personality, legacy of accomplishment & her loving nature.

I first got to know Kate-back then Kathy-in 1971-72 in Rome on the St Mary´s/ Notre Dame program. We came to know one another through mutual friends, in classes and meals at the Tiziano, in the hotel lobby, exploring the city, in restaurants, on bus tours.

I remember Kate mostly for her sense of humor, her laughter and appreciation for life´s beauty. She was always quick, witty and incisive, full of ideas and views. She had a wonderful personality, was curious, confident, full of life, eager to explore, intelligent and vibrant.

I have an image of her lying on her back in a grassy meadow somewhere laughing and talking, full of wonder.

I remember being impressed-we all were, I think-that her dad was a Chicago judge, in my mind a Mayor Daley judge.

Later I remember feeling honored to be invited to visit Kate and her family at their vacation home (in Michigan City) on Lake Michigan. Her family was so welcoming.

I also saw Kate in the mid-70´s in Chicago, where she and her sister Ellen had a lovely apartment north of downtown Chicago. We all shared a love for ethnicity, I remember going to a Serbian restaurant together. Or was it Moroccan?

I remember going to a Rome reunion in Chicago in 1992, where we stayed at the Palmer House. In my mind at least, Kate served as an unofficial host. I guess by then she was a lawyer, on her way to becoming a judge like her dad. I remember walking with her through the recently redesigned O´Hare airport, laughing and talking excitedly, and again being impressed that this was Kate´s home town.

At another reunion, this time in South Bend around 2014, we spent lots of time together in laughter and conversation. I was always eager to her opinions on the state of affairs in Chicago, in the country, in Italy and the world beyond.

The last time I saw Kate was in the summer of 2022 when a group of friends went to visit her. She had just moved into assisted living. We were able to go out to dinner for a meal on Clark Street and then to a local Starbucks. Kate was in fine form in that time, her old self again.

I treasure my friendship with Kate, she was delightful to be with. There was always laughter and engaging conversation. She taught me a lot when we were young, being the refined young woman that she was. I only wish that we had more time together.
