Judith Akers Obituary

Akers, Judith A.

Judith A. Akers, 81, of Wilmette, IL, passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2025. She was the loving daughter of Milburn "Pete" Akers and Beulah (McClure) Akers.

Judy graduated from New Trier High School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from MacMurray College, and her Master of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Judy was a librarian with the Evanston schools for 35 years until her retirement. She had many friends among the Evanston District 65 teachers' community, and was an active and beloved long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston.

Judy loved traveling and was an avid reader and lover of the arts. For many years, she traveled to London and Stratford for the Shakespeare Festival and for mystery conventions. She traveled around the United States and throughout the world, including Costa Rica, China, Japan, France, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, and the Caribbean. She will be remembered for her loyalty and devotion to friends and family, her love of travel, her quick wit, and her kindness.

Judy's father, Milburn "Pete" Akers was hired by Marshall Field in 1941 to be the political editor of his newspaper, the Chicago Sun. In 1948, when that paper merged with the Chicago Daily Times, he was named managing editor. Pete served as executive editor of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1950 to 1959, and then as editor of the newspaper from 1959 to 1965.

A private burial service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, with a Celebration of Life at the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston to follow at a later date.
