Joseph Yurkanin Obituary

Yurkanin, Dr. Joseph Donald (age 75) - Born on March 26, 1937, Joseph Donald Yurkanin died peacefully on January 30, 2013, at home in Marietta, Georgia, in the loving arms of his wife and children. Dr. Yurkanin is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Justine (Chaykovsky) Yurkanin; his brother, Walter, and his sister, Eleanor. Joseph attended Kings College, Pennsylvania and then Loyola Medical School in Chicago. As partner at Hedges Clinic in Frankfort, Illinois, Dr. Yurkanin touched the lives of many patients in his 35 year career. In his professional life, he was a doctor in the deepest sense; his compassion was evident in his patient rapport. A respected leader in his profession, he will be missed by his colleagues and peers. Involved in his community, Dr. Yurkanin participated in and supported numerous events and activities sponsored by his parish and the Catholic schools his children attended. He is survived by his wife, Carole Ann (Ford), and his children and their families: Colleen (Yurkanin) and James Ham, Walter and Marcela Yurkanin, Cathleen (Yurkanin) and Daniel Murphy, and Jennifer (Yurkanin) and JP Weber; his grandchildren, Kathryn and Caroline Ham, Joseph, Justin, and Jack Yurkanin, Kelsey (Murphy) Saberhagen, Bridget, and Danny Murphy, and James Weber. A true sense of joie de vivre defined Joe's life, and he enjoyed every minute granted to him. His joy for living is evident in the stories and smiles that will remain treasured memories among family and friends. His unconditional love will be sorely missed by his family and remembered by those blessed to have enjoyed his loyal friendship. Visitation will be Monday, February 4, 5-8PM Gerardi Funeral Home, Lincoln Highway at 95th Avenue, Frankfort, IL; a memorial mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 5, 10AM, St. Mary Catholic Church, 19515 S. 115th Avenue, Mokena, lL. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to VITAS Community Connections Hospice, 1575 Northside Drive, Suite 375, Atlanta, GA 30318. Dr. Yurkanin was our family doctor when he first came to Hedges Clinc in Frankfort. He was my mother's one and only doctor. He was so kind to her. She died at the age of 101 years and Dr. & Mrs. Yurkanin celebrated her 100th birthday with our large family. Her name was Ruth Swanberg. Also he was such a kind, wonderful doctor to our children and myself and my late husband, Bud Warning, when he had cancer in 1996. Dr. Yurkanin was really a true friend to all of his patients. We certainly missed him so much when he retired.
Love & prayers to all of his family,
Helen Swanberg Warning

I was so sorry to hear of Joe's passing.
No one informed me of his wake. I wish I could have personally extended my sincere condolences to Carol and the family. My husband, Dr. Raj Shah, and I admired Joe and his great patient admiration and care. Joe is now with Raj and my son, Frank in heaven.I remember all the various get togethers we used to have when he was at the Hedges Clinic namely "The Scientific Meetings". All the doctors there were close at that time. It was a special time that is now gone. May Joe and all our loved ones who have passed rest in peace.

He was a great doctor and a fine man. I was never afraid to go to the doctor because it was just going to see Dr Joe. We are sorry for your loss, but he left his legacy. You will be missed DR JOE!

Walter and family, my deepest sympathies go to you and your family on the loss of your dad. I still can hear him saying, "It's a girl! Just what we ordered." when my daughter, Karrie, was born, and he saw me through a horrible personal time just by saying, "These things have a way of working out." I won't ever forget the best doctor that God ever put on this earth. He was the best.
