Joseph Tholl Obituary

Tholl Sr., Joseph M. Passed peacefully in the presence of family. Beloved husband of Marianne M. (nee Badali) for 60 years; loving father of Joseph, Michael (Diane), Catherine (Jonathan) Nordstrom, Timothy (MaryKay), Bruce (Kathleen), Paul (Kelly) and Bonnie Tholl; revered grandfather of Kathleen, Jaclyn, Lauryn, Brian, Bradley (Sarah), Brianna, Jestine, Mitchell, Timothy, Anthony, Joseph, Nathaniel, Jacob, Kaitlin, August, Nina, Hannah and Samuel; caring brother of Rose Jacobsen and the late Dolores Scheidel, James, John, Jerry and Mercedes Hurt. Funeral Thursday, December 18, 2014, 9:30 a.m., from the Vandenberg Funeral Home, 17248 S. Harlem Ave., Tinley Park, IL 60477 to St. George Church, Mass 10:00 a.m. Interment in Holy Sepulchre. Joseph treasured the countless relationships formed with the athletes he coached through his involvement with the Tinley Park Bulldog and Orland Park Pioneer youth organizations. In addition, he was recognized as one of the founders of the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation. A man of faith, he cherished the friendship forged through his involvement as a member of St. George Church Parish in Tinley Park for 56 years. He was furthermore a proud member of the Local 130 Plumbers Union for 59 years. Joseph served from 1951 - 1954 in the United States Army and was a Veteran of the Korean War. Some of his fondest memories included holiday gatherings, sporting events and time spent watching his family grow. Having his family close brought him the greatest joy and made him smile the most. He considered himself, above all, rich in family. Visitation Wednesday, December 17, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. For information on services, 708-532-1635 or www.vandenbergfuneralhome.com.

To the family of Joseph Tholl Sr. who I always called him Joe. We always had things to talk about most of which was wrestling. It was always a pleasure to see him at the matches that I was either coaching or officiating. I know he will be missed and my wife Virginia and I plus my family send our condolences and prays to the family.

I send my condolences to the family of Joseph Tholl. Joe was truly a “Pioneer” in every sense of the word. He coached youth sports all of his life. He was a Pioneer and one of the key members of the group that started and administrated the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation, where I was honored to work alongside him. Joe was also a Bulldog! If he felt strongly about an issue, he would let you know and keep letting you know until you got the message, and he was almost always right! As anyone who was lucky enough to have been associated with or worked with Joe can tell you, he had the friendship and respect of the athletes, parents, coaches, and officials he dealt with over the years.
I count Joe as one of my lifelong friends. Joe was always surrounded by his family so I got to know Marianne, Joe Jr., Mike, Catherine, Tim, Bruce, Paul, and Bonnie. I will miss Joe, as will the thousands of friends he made.

No words can describe the impact that this one man had on so many of us men from the south side of Chicago that were fortunate enough to have been coached by him. The number literally has to be in the ten's of thousands. Being one of those men, I must first express the heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Tholl and family for sharing him so selflessly for so many years with all of us. I am, and always will be, a better man because of my years being coached by, and subsequent lifelong friendship, with Mr. Tholl. When I get to town tomorrow for the wake & funeral, I am going to go for a run. And when I get to the Bulldog building, I am going to hear those words I have not heard in 45 years…..”5 laps 8-ball”. And for the first time in my life I am going to enjoy every one of them (no cutting it short in front of the backstop or foul poles either). Maybe I'll see one of you other fortunate “8-balls” out there.
With much Love & Respect, Shawn Bergeron (“8-ball” for life)
