Joseph Smith Obituary

Smith, Joseph Arnett City Colleges of Chicago Professor of Mathematics (retired) died Friday, December 20, 2002. He had been a kidney dialysis patient for 15 years. Before taking employment at City Colleges, he had taught in the Chicago Public Schools at Farragut High School and other schools. For City Colleges of Chicago, he taught at the Southeast/Olive-Harvey College campus for more than 30 years where he received numerous awards for excellence in teaching. He was a member of several national mathematics and engineering associations. He received a B.S. in Math with a concentration in Physics from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1957 and an M.S. in Math from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1967; he also had done study toward a doctorate in mathematics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is survived by his wife, Emma Smith (Daley College Professor); a son, Dr. Charles Smith and a sister, Shirley Black. Visitation will be a the Taylor Funeral Home 79th at Wabash/63rd E. 79th St. in Chicago, Thursday, December 26th, 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. A wake and the funeral services will be Friday, December 27, 10 to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 12 noon respectively, Commonwealth Community Church, 140 West 81st Street, Chicago, Il, 60620. Joseph (Brother Joe) has been a positive influence to many many individuals over the years. I have benefited from talking casually during Fraternity meetings, Chicago . Alumni and especially during each 3rd Sunday morning at 1/4 Century Breakfast.I share in our lost to a Greater Being.
