From the Marszalek Family

November 4, 2004

Father Joe was our family priest for as long as I can remember. My mom and dad met Father Joe when he was ordained in 1957 and sent to St. Bruno. Our family, which included five girls, were members of St. Bruno Church and we all went to grammar school at St. Bruno School. My dad and Father Joe were the best of friends, and used to bowl together on a league. He was there for all our family celebrations (First Communion, Confirmation, weddings-three of us were married by him) and our family sorrows (funerals). He used to come to dinner at our house all the time. We kept in touch with him throughout his ministry. The entire Marszalek clan wants to send Father Joe's family our deepest, heartfelt condolences on his death. He was truly a holy, caring, gentle soul and the best priest in the world. May God comfort all of you in this time of sorrow.

Our deepest sympathy,

Bruno, Frances, Elaine, Rosemary, Gloria, Paula, Christine and all the members of our extended family

We were saddened by the death of Father Joe. We grew up in Chicago and St. Bruno's was our home parish. He married my sister and her husband and was a guest at their wedding. We remember him visiting our classrooms when we were in school and his work with the teen club. He was a wonderful human being and will be missed. Our condolences to his family.

Fr. Joe was a great example for me when we were neighbors in Humboldt Park - he at St. Fidelis and I at St. Sylvester. His calm and kind manner always made you feel welcome and special. He always had time and a helping hand for everyone he met along the path. He will be missed by the priests and people of Chicago.

As we remember our faithful departed today, we are encouraged to entrust them to God's loving care, to know that they live now in a new way in the Spirit, and to feel their love guiding us to join in God's praise forever.

Peace be in your heart,

I am very saddened on hearing of the death of "Fr. Joe". I met Fr. Joe while teaching at St Mary of Perpetual Help High School, where he also taught and was Assosiate Pastor. This was during the late sixties when the Viet Nam War was going on, as well as the Civil Rights Movement, the Hippy Generation and Flower Children. These events had quite an influence on our students. To say the least he was a rock, an example, and a friend to the faculty and student body. He helped guide us during these difficult times. Fr. Joe, we will miss you dearly.

Fr. Joe touched the hearts of many people during his many years in ministry. I met him when he was assigned to St. Helen's Parish and I was in grammar school. When I graduated 8th grade, he gave me a small bronze cross with the Last Supper beneath it. For years I've taken it with me when visiting the sick.

Fr. Joe taught me a lot about who God is and was an inspiration to me growing up. He was like a father to me. I will always remember him as one who loved God, family and the many people he called friends.

Fr. Grembla was a family fixture at our home. St. Fidelis was our childhood church and School. He was always so good to our families. He made things so much more enlighting, his desire to know what what was going on in our lives. My husband and I our both 36 yrs old and we have one child. We went away to college and when we returned we got married at St. Sylvestor church and always thought about Fr. Grembla and where we would be at that time. As time did go by and we later in life became parishers at St. Priscilla we look up at the podem and it was like a HUGE bright light and came over both of us ...it was Fr. Grembla--my husband and I was so over joyed that when we apporach him after mass to shake his hand....he could not believe it himself. Here we were grown adults with a family of our own...It was a Great sunday for the rest of the day. We both told our mom's and they were excited as well. Fr. Grembla was not able to make it for our son's Bapitism, but he made sure to give us his blessings when he saw us again the next sunday. We had the pleasure of seeing him once again at St. Priscilla and for that we would always remember and be greatful to Fr. Grembla!!

Please accept my deepest sympathy. Prayers are with Fr. Grembla, as well as his entire family and his friends. His death is very sad to me. -- He married my husband and me in 1997. He was extremely kind to do so, with only a three-week notice. When we decided to get married, and chose not to wait (given we had already been dating for 10-1/2 years), he was the first one we phoned. And, he agreed to do this for us, even though he was going to be having surgery within those few weeks. And, on the evening of our wedding rehearsal, while in the rectory office, looking in the record book of baptisms, we discovered that he also had baptized me. So, we came a long way together! I remember him laughing as he told me, "I baptized you, don't you remember?" I know I was there, but I admit, I didn't remember! Also, he married us on his birthday, March 16th. Every year since our wedding, I sent him a birthday card, and he and we also exchanged Christmas cards. I grieve for him, holding very fond memories close to my heart. God rest his soul.

Today I lost my lifelong trusted friend and buddy...Padre Jose (that's my nickname for Him) was always there since I was 14 years old and working with him at St. Bruno's Teen Club. Whether in person or over the phone he offered encouragement, hope and a few chuckles to relieve the pain. He paid me the greatest honor by doing the funerals for my parents, who also loved and respected him. When Mom passed 3 years ago, he came back to St. Bruno's and honored Her with the funeral Mass. After my heart attack he called and got me through that crisis...when I asked him if he could send me the obligatory plastic rosary (he always brought one when he visited in the hospital) he sent me His because I was in Florida and he said he ran out of the ones he gave away. So He'll always be right there with me when I pray and I'll always feel safer and stronger because of it. Thank you Padre for a lifetime of memories, happiness and strength that only YOU could have imparted. I'll think of you often and cherish your memory!

Fr Joe was a great influence in our lives. During times of crisis and times of joy, he offered us his support and love. He was a living testimonial to the true meaning of priesthood. There are so very many lives he touched, so many people he inspired, yet he always remained humble. Fr Joe G made the world a better place and we will miss him.
