If only -- That was my thought when I learned of John's death. If only I'd known of his return to the Chicago area. I knew John in the 60s when I was a teenager. I remember him making faces at me as I sang church solos. I remember Peanut having to be shaved. I remember a lot. If only I'd had the chance to renew the friendship.

John, Thank you for 17 years of close friendship, for helping me be a better musician, and for your incredible insight. I met you as a hero of my boyhood, discovering a world of music you shaped. I lost you as a good friend. Thanks for the calls, they always came at unexpected times, were delightful and always ended with you saying "good to hear your voice again".

Many, many memories working with John from 1959 on. He was a most gifted artist.
When dining with the late, great Quentin Maclean in Toronto at his posh club in the early sixties, John's recording with Bobby Hackett was played on the music system. He, the great master of the theatre organ, ceased conversation and stated "that is how the theatre organ should be played". A heartfelt tribute from an "immortal" in the business.
