John Norcross Obituary

Norcross, John D. Sunday, November 9, 2014, in Chicago. John spent his final days surrounded by the love of his closest friends, pastor, and wife. His last afternoon was filled with harmony and joy as musicians from Sharing Notes played works by Strauss and Brahms, his favorite composers. He passed away peacefully that evening in his sleep. The dearly beloved husband of Joanna Elin Petroff Norcross, John was also the loving brother of Mary Jane (late John C. Rainey) Norcross, the late Peter Christopher Norcross and the late Richard David Norcross; and the cherished uncle of Cynthia (Jeffrey) Penney and Ginger (T.J. McCall) Tougas. John was a lifelong resident of Chicago, a city he loved. He was born to Dr. John R. Norcross and Louise M. Ballschmider Norcross. After attending Loyola Academy he majored in economics at Stanford University. A graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, he was a Founding Partner in the law firm Crane and Norcross. John lived with his wife in the Gold Coast neighborhood, where he co-founded Gibsons Restaurant Group and took a great interest in the original steakhouse, now in its 25th year. Well-known for his investing skills, John began each morning trading for himself, family and friends. John was a man of great faith and devotion to the Catholic Church, a sportsman, traveler, and supporter of the performing arts. Visitation Saturday, November 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Saint Mary Church, 1012 Lake St., Evanston, IL. Funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. is also at Saint Mary Church in Evanston, followed by burial at All Saints Cemetery, Norcross Family Lot, Des Plaines, IL. Arrangements by Lane-Moynihan Funeral Directors. It was with sadness that I learned that Mr Norcross passed away. I was privileged to captain the boat he was a partner in owning. My memory of him was that he was a happy and uplifting man. My late condolences to his family, partner, and friends.

John will be missed greatly! I had the pleasure of knowing him and sharing a baseball game. It was a Cubs Rooftop party He and Joanna were hosting. I sat next to John and it was the first time in person I had to really talk with him, some quality time to just chat. What a great memory! Our hearts will be filled with memories of John that will live forever... Our thoughts and prayers go out to Joanna and his family to be strong and to keep those memories alive.

Joanna, Mary Jane, and nieces, you have our sincere sympathy in John's passing. John was in Peter's and my wedding 44 years ago. John and Peter were cousins and shared many growing-up memories as well as an interest in sports and the stock market. I especially enjoyed John's and Joanna's trips to Arizona. "Eternal rest grant onto him, O Lord . . ."

Joanna,

We will miss him and his smiling face. We have lots of memories from Lake Beulah, the night Bobby Knight threw the chair across the arena, and the Northwestern vs Notre Dame game where John stood up in his Northwestern sweatshirt and chanted, "That's alright, that's okay, you will work for us someday!"

Mr. Norcross:

Must have been a great guy. He raised a great son with ethics.

As a young real estate tax attorney in the early 80's, employees at the Cook County Assessor's Office and the Board of Appeals would be confused by similarities in our names (John Norcross and John Norris). Having received results on several occasions that I always tendered to the county employees, one time I received John's results mixed in with my own and returned to my office. Rather than return them to the county office, I instead took them to the Crane & Norcross offices where I introduced myself to John. When I told him this wasn't the first time it had occurred, John laughed and asked if I had billed 'em! Great sense of humor and wonderful guy. He will be missed by many. My deepest condolences to Joanna, M.J., John's family and friends.
